Literary Suffolk Text Only Among the earliest writers living in Suffolk was Jocelin of Brakelond (?1155-?1202), who is so important to our understanding of medieval life. He was born in Bury St Edmunds in part of the town now known as Brackland. He entered the Abbey as a monk in 1173 and his chronicle of the years 1174-1202 is a fresh and lively account of the medieval monk's life with its tensions, quarrels and political intrigue, a true-life Brother Cadfael. The great Norman tower is certainly the one which Jocelin's Abbot Samson passed through for his installation. The vigorous portrait of this great reforming abbot, written by Jocelin in his Chronicle , inspired Thomas Carlyle to write about him in Past and Present (1843). What is left of the Abbey can be seen in the Abbey Gardens and a Visitor's Centre gives information on its history. At certain times of the year tours are led by a costumed guide in the form of Brother Jocelin himself! There is a good translation of Brakelond's Chronicle in the World's Classics (1989).

In this fragment our poet reveals himself as an incurable Anglophobe. Note well the many inferences :
  • Four as a mystic number has had, in the superstitious lore of many countries, a sinister or unlucky quality. I point out two instances in literature to bear out this premis. "The Sign of the Four," Arthur Conan Doyle, 1889. And the interesting fact that Dumas titled his novel about Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D'Artagnan, "The Three Musketeers." Sheer superstition. In this case, however, it is obvious that the reader is warned against the four major divisions of Britain, i.e., England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales. Guttaperchaphobia. A morbid dislike for cleaning fish. (Rich. Holland, Univ. of Chi., 1945.) A barbed comment on British culinary practices. A seaport, 76 miles E.S.E. of London, famed as one of the Cinque-Ports, pop. 39,950 (1938). This, the usual port of entry from France, is also noted for its soft chalk-white cliffs.

Monday 11 February 2002 At 1200, EST the Training Ship Empire State was located 13 nautical miles southeast of Guanica, Puerto Rico, 17 degrees and 45 minutes North Latitude and 066 degrees 51 minutes West Longitude, steering course 280 degrees true at a speed of 10 knots/Rpm 48 turns. The weather was clear, winds from the east at 17 to 21 knots, air temperature was 81 degrees Fahrenheit, barometric pressure was 1019 millibars, seas were moderate from the east, sea injection temperature was 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Depth of water beneath the keel was 902 fathoms. CAPTAIN'S LOG "Could we see when and where we would meet again, we would be more tender when we bid our friends goodbye." Ouida The now familiar checklists were wrinkled and dog-eared when all of the complex guidance and propulsion systems were at last on-line and operating normally. But as the brilliant orange sun peaked through the puffy clouds at sunrise, we were ready and the "dawn" of departure slowly gave way to expectation. At 0831 the Pilot stepped onto the bridge, introduced himself to the watch, and at 0917 we were underway to Port Everglades, Florida; ETA 0800 15 February 2002. The ocean that we inhabit during the next few days is dotted with hundreds of tiny, and not so tiny, islands with names like Turks, Caicos, Inagua, and Exuma. Their names call forth the memory of adventurous sailors and of sea voyages past but mostly they remind us of the dangers that abound and of a complex navigational picture, which mandates constant attention. The cadets are well prepared to face the challenges. See you tomorrow from somewhat closer to there.
