  • PREFACE. MY LORD BAG OF RICE. THE TONGUE-CUT SPARROW. THE STORY OF URASHIMA TARO, THE FISHER LAD. ... THE STONES OF FIVE COLORS AND THE EMPRESS JOKWA.

  • This etext was produced by Charles Franks, Greg Weeks and the Online Distributed Proofreading Team. TO ELEANOR MARION-CRAWFORD. I DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO YOU AND TO THE SWEET CHILD-FRIENDSHIP THAT YOU GAVE ME IN THE DAYS SPENT WITH YOU BY THE SOUTHERN SEA, WHEN YOU USED TO LISTEN WITH UNFEIGNED PLEASURE TO THESE FAIRY STORIES FROM FAR JAPAN. MAY THEY NOW REMIND YOU OF MY CHANGELESS LOVE AND REMEMBRANCE. Y. T. O. Tokio, 1908.
    PREFACE.
This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk-lore. Grateful acknowledgment is due to Mr. Y. Yasuoka, Miss Fusa Okamoto, my brother Nobumori Ozaki, Dr. Yoshihiro Takaki, and Miss Kameko Yamao, who have helped me with translations.

If you're interested in doing this kind of thing for PG, here is my list of books that are public domain and aren't already in PG. I'm usually looking for books from this list while at old book stores. All of the OCR/proofing work is being done by Charles at his Distributed Proofing site. Most of the page scans were created by scanning the books on an Epson ES-600C parallel port flat bed scanner. Some of the books had their bindings removed and were scanned a page at a time, and some were simply laid flat on the scanner and had facing pages scanned together. The images were processed with perl scripts to autocrop, rotate and split facing pages. Touch-up image editing was performed in Picture Publisher as was the initial scan. All of the scans are B/W at 300 dpi. 300 dpi is the mechanical scanning limit of the ES-600C. The versions of the books linked to at Amazon aren't the versions used to generate the page scans. The page scans are from mostly beat up to the point of falling apart pre-1923 editions that I've acquired at various used book stores. The "Tom Swift in the Caves of Ice" is from the Des Moines Public Library. The "Tom Swift and his Wireless Message" is an inter-library loan from the Florida International University Library. The "Tom Swift and his Photo Telephone" is an inter-library loan from the University of Iowa Library. Special thanks to Jim Towey and Adventure Continues for missing Tom Swift pages and donating the copy of "Tom Swift and His Great Searchlight".

    Japanese Fairy Tales
    Compiled by Yei Theodora Ozaki
    A. L. Burt Company, Publishers, New York
    Published 1904
Tuttle Co. now publishes a very interesting book on Japanese Tales titled The Japanese Fairy Book by the same author. The Goblin of Adachigahara
Long, long ago there was a large plain called Adachigahara, in the provinces of Japan. This place was said to be haunted by a cannibal goblin who took the form of an old woman.
From time to time many travelers disappeared and were never heard of more, and the old women round the charcoal braziers in the evenings, and the girls washing the household rice at the wells in the mornings, whispered dreadful stories of how the missing folk had been lured to the goblin's cottage and devoured, for the goblin lived only on human flesh. No one dared to venture near the haunted spot after sunset, and all those who could, avoided it in the daytime, and travelers were warned of the dreadful place.
One day as the sun was setting, a priest came to the plain. He was a belated traveler, and his robe showed that he was a Buddhist pilgrim walking from shrine to shrine to pray for some blessing or to crave for forgiveness of sins. He had apparently lost his way, and as it was late he met no one who could show him the road or warn him of the haunted spot.
