MARY CRAWFORD FRASER
Mary Crawford Fraser was born in Italy in 1851 of American parents. Her father was the famous sculptor Thomas Crawford who created the Washington Monument. Mary was brought up in a highly artistic and intellectual environment and knew intimately Robert and Elizabeth Browning, Hans Christian Andersen, Edward Lear and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow among others. Mary was also sent to England for a number of years where she was educated with her sister Jennie. In 1874 Mary met and married Hugh Fraser a British diplomat. After living in Peking, Santiago and Vienna they moved to Tokyo in 1889 and here Mary found her second spiritual home "In my two real homes, Japan and South Italy, beauty lives". She was inspired to write extensively throughout her stay in Japan. With her sense of internationalise and her acute perception she presented a delicate, fresh and unprejudiced view of Japan and the Japanese in Meiji times. A Love Story from the Celestial Kingdom...
The Lady in the Moon, thought, "These are very dear people - I must do something special for them, to honor their devotion and faithful hearts." As she was then sailing over China in the Great Ship of the Moon - she called her servant, Moon Ray and said, "Go and find my daughter, the Princess Moonbeam. Send 3 shooting stars out to let her know I wish to speak with her." Moon Ray said, "Yes, your majesty" and she flew off into the stars to find the Princess, sprinkling silver moondust on the mountaintops below to make them shine brightly in the moonlight, as she went.
Princess Moonbeam was playing with her favorite pet, the Dog Star along the Milky Way when Moon Ray found her. "I shall go to my Mother right away", she said, when Moon Ray told her she was needed. She beamed across the starry sky and soon arrived at the Palace of the Moon. "Dear Mother, I came as quickly as I received your request!" The Lady in the Moon said, "I have an important mission for you, my shining princess." And she told her about Yen-ki and Mai-ling: "I want you to go to Earth for a time, become mortal and be their Earth-child... until a time not far off, when I come for you." "Yes, I will be happy to do this... but won't they be sad when it is time for me to return to my home in the stars?" asked Princess Moonbeam. "Yes, beloved" said her mother, "but they will have found peace in their souls for having earned a beautiful child by their faith, and understanding that everything in their world is only loaned to them to be cared for during their time."

This page is for general links to resources on Japan, almost all are in English. This page is a result of my need to keep an organized list of useful links on the web. The most common way to locate useful stuff on the web is to search with a vague direction and hope you stumble across something useful. In my case this usually means useful in searching for information related to the Anime Companion Supplement a web supplement to my first book. In fact this page can be considered a supplement to the supplement. For links related to places such as buildings, cities, and landmarks as well as orgainizations see the proper entry in Anime Companion Supplement many items are listed only there and not on this page.
