The Age of George III
Thomas Paine (1737-1809)
Thomas Paine was born on 29 January 1737 at Thetford, Norfolk. Hewas the son of Joseph Paine, by his wife Frances (Cocke). The father was a freeman of Thetford, a staymaker, and a small farmer. He was a member of the Society of Friends , who had a small meeting-house at Thetford. The mother belonged to the Church of England Rights of Man Terrible , commanded by Captain Death, but was brought back by his father's remonstrances. He afterwards, however, went to sea in the King of Prussia. War with France was declared 28 May 1756, and the Terrible was taken in action 28 December Paine must therefore have been nineteen at the time of these adventures. He soon returned to staymaking. He worked for two years in London, and (at this period or in 1766-7) showed his scientific taste by buying a pair of globes and attending the lectures of the self-taught men of science, Benjamin Martin and James Ferguson (1710-1776). He also became known to the astronomer John Bevis. In 1758 he moved to Dover, and in April 1759 set up as a staymaker at Sandwich. On 17 September 1759 he married Mary Lambert. His business was unsuccessful, and he moved to Margate, where his wife died in 1760. Rickman describes him as a strong Whig Pennsylvania Magazine or American Museum against slavery . Rush claims to have suggested Paine's next performance. The first blood of the American war was shed in the skirmish at Lexington on 19 April 1775, and Paine resolved to express the sentiment, which had long been growing up, though hitherto not avowed, in favour of independence of the colonies. Paine had already spoken out in a letter to the

Thomas Paine
American political pamphleteer born in England. His works include the pamphlets Common Sense (1776) and Crisis (1776-83), supporting the American colonists fight for independence. The Rights of Man (1791-92), a justification of the French Revolution; and The Age of Reason (1194-96) a defence of Deism. Note: there is no evidence that Paine was vegetarian, but his thinking was very influential on those who followed. Quote: The moral duty of man consists of imitating the moral goodness and benificence of God manifested in the creation towards all his creatures. Everything of persecution and revenge between man and man, and everything of cruelty to animals is a violation of moral duty. - The Age of Reason A poem: CRUELTY TO ANIMALS EXPOSED Occasioned by a real circumstance A Pale and wrinkled wretch I saw one day,
Whom pale disease had wither'd half away,
And yet the sad remaining half seem'd curst
With all the mis'ries that befell the first;

Thomas Jefferson
U.S. statesman; secretary of state (1790-93); third president (1801-09); He was the chief drafter of the Declaration of Independence (1776), the chief opponent of the centralising policies of the Federalists under Hamilton and effected the Louisiana purchase (1803). There is no suggestion that Jefferson was vegetarian, but the following quote is of interest: "SIR,Your letter of February the 18th came to hand on the 1st instant; and the request of the history of my physical habits would have puzzled me not a little, had it not been for the model with which you accompanied it, of Doctor Rush's answer to a similar inquiry. I live so much like other people, that I might refer to ordinary life as a history of my own. Like my friend the Doctor, I have lived temperately, eating little animal food, and that not as an aliment, so much as a condiment for the vegetables, which constitute my principle diet."
The above quote was taken from a letter written on March 21, 1819 to Dr. Vine Utley when Jefferson was 1 month away from his 76th birthday. The source is Jefferson Writings published by the Library of America, 1984

[BACK to the Great Freethinkers.] Thomas Paine By Punkerslut The author of the American Revolution and a strong Abolitionist, Thomas Paine was a political writer who dared to ask the questions that were punishable by death. He was as much defiant of the Monarch powers that hunted him down as he was defiant of the religious powers that ostracized him from civilization. When Paine was only eight years of age, he immediately began to doubt the Bible. He had heard a sermon on atonement; the sermon described how god had murdered his only son to revenge himself when there was no other way. Upon hearing this appalling doctrine, this child of innocence and beauty the young Thomas Paine became an infidel and disagreed with the Bible. From these bright, inquisitive beginnings in childhood, Thomas Paine made great strides for the advancement of Rationalism. Robert Green Ingersoll once said of Thomas Paine, "With his name left out, the history of liberty cannot be written." [ On Thomas Paine , by Robert G. Ingersoll, 1870.]

One of the forefathers of liberalism, an original Republican and an opponent to much of the oppression in the 18th Century. Born on January 29, 1737, in Thetford, Norfolk and the son of Quakers, Paine left school at 13 and followed his father’s trade by going into corset making. He later become an excise officer, a job from which he was sack from at t he age of 34 when he advocated a pay rise. With the advice of Benjamin Franklin he immigrated to the USA (living in Philadelphia) in 1774. He was editor or the Pennsylvania Magazine and unlike most other American revolutionaries he attacked slavery and defended rights for women. On January 1, 1776, his pamphlet, Common Sense , was published which stated that the American colonies should become an independent republic. This sold over 500,000 copies and encouraged the writing of the Declaration of Independence six months later.

After meeting Benjamin Franklin in London, Paine emigrated to America in 1774 where he published an antislavery tract and became co-editor of Pennsylvania Magazine . No great fan of the English King (or any other royalty for that matter), Paine soon became an articulate spokesman for the American independence movement. Paine's pro-independence pamphlet Common Sense published in January of 1776 quickly became well known to every literate colonist. It is claimed that as many as half a million copies may have been distributed in a country with only a few million inhabitants. Legend tells that Paine was tarred and feathered at one time in New Jersey, but no proof exists to this legend. Many scurrilous tales about Paine were circulated, first in reaction by the British during the time of the American Revolution, and later by his political opponents. Thomas Paine used his powerful ability to present ideas common to his time in clear form, in contrast with highly philosophical approaches carried by his colleagues. Common Sense convinced many Americans, including George
