Born on Jan. 29, 1737, in Thetford, Norfolk, England, he emigrated to Philadelphia in 1774, with introductions from Benjamin Franklin, who then represented the American colonies in Great Britain. Once there, he edited the Pennsylvania Magazine and published other writings. On Jan. 1, 1776, Common Sense appeared. In a dramatic, rhetorical style, it asserted that the American colonies received no advantage from their mother country, which was intent on exploiting them, and that every consideration of common sense called for the colonies to become independent of Great Britain and to establish a republican government of their own. Published anonymously, the pamphlet sold more than 500,000 copies and helped encourage the issuance of the Declaration of Independence half a year later. During the Revolution Paine wrote a series of pamphlets, entitled The American Crisis, that George Washington ordered read to his troops to improve their morale; the first of these opened with the famous words "These are the times that try men's souls." In 1778 Congress appointed Paine secretary of the committee of foreign affairs. After losing the post during a political dispute, he became clerk of the Pennsylvania legislature. He played a prominent part in both the American and French Revolutions, although he was eventually outlawed in Britain, mainly because of his views on religion and the abolition of the monarchy. He had a great influence on later generations of people in the Humanist tradition, particularly through the two-volume biography of him of 1892 by Moncure Conway, after whom Conway Hall Humanist Centre in London is named. Thomas Paine coined what is, perhaps, the best short definition of Humanism: "My country is the world, my religion is to do good". However, in The Age of Reason he says "I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life". He also says, "My own mind is my own church". He saw god in nature but in no book or other 'revelation'. He specifically says in The Age of Reason that he disbelieves that the Bible and the Koran are 'the word of God'. So, Thomas Paine was neither an agnostic, nor an atheist, but a deist. Such a viewpoint essentially says that a god created the universe at the beginning of things and left the great world-machine to work out its own self-evolution according to natural law.

After working as a corset maker his father's trade and as a tax collector, Paine emigrated to Philadelphia in 1774, and quickly immersed himself in revolutionary agitation. A naturally persuasive writer, his pamphlet, Common Sense (Philadelphia, 1776), became a siren call for American independence. In eminently clear, straightforward language, it outlined an argument for the superiority of republican government over a monarchy and demanded legal and political equality for all citizens. Furthermore, Paine asserted that his argument extended beyond the narrow conditions of colonial America, envisioning an international struggle for civil and human rights. Common Sense sold as many as 150,000 copies in 1776, and within a year, had been translated into French. Although clearly articulating a revolutionary positon, Paine was not enamored of the violence spawned by the Revolution. "I joined in the defense of America," he wrote after the war, "on the ground that a Country invaded is in the condition of a house broke into, and on no other principles than this, can a reflective mind, at least such as mine, justify war to itself" (1787 September 21). Yet Paine never wavered from the radical cause, writing consistently in support of independence and, later, taking part in the movement that produced the highly democratic constitution of the state of Pennsylvania.

His parents were Quakers. He left school at thirteen and till eighteen worked at his father's trade of stay-making, when he went to sea in a privateer. In April, 1759, he settled at Sandwich as a master stay-maker, and in September of that year married. Not prospering he removed to Margate the next year and there soon after his wife died. In 1761 he entered the excise branch of the government service and remained there till 1774, with the exception of a couple of years when, probably owing to his lax conduct, he was out of the service. He was restored but again dismissed, and finally, on the charge of smuggling. In 1771 he married Elizabeth Ollive, daughter of his landlord. In 1772 he wrote a small pamphlet, The Case of the Officers of Excise; with Remarks on the Qualifications of Officers, and on the numerous Evils arising to the Revenue, from the Insufficiency of the present Salary: humbly addressed to the Members of both Houses of Parliament . It was the first public exhibit on of his power as a writer, but it gave offense to the upper officials and probably was the occasion of his dismissal on a trumped-up charge.
