Freeman Hall
FREEMAN, Alice (1855-1902) for whom Freeman Hall was named, graduated from the University of Michigan in 1876 and received a doctorate from that school in 1882. She was a woman of great courage and struggled through the University at a time when coeds were none too popular. She became the second president of Wellesley College and brought Wellesley out of obscurity and into the public eye. Her extended activities in educational matters after her marriage to G. H. Palmer gave her a prominence surpassed by few women of her generation. Her character secured for her a reputation of literary prominence unusual for a woman of affairs who wrote no books and published only a half dozen articles and whose public addresses were never published.
Busse House
BUSSE, Florence E. (1885-1958) received an A.B. from Northwestern University and an M.A. (1918) from Columbia University. Before coming to Iowa State in 1919 as professor of domestic science, she held positions as head of the domestic science at Upper Iowa University and at Cornell College. She was head of the food and nutrition at Iowa State in 1923-24 and was acting head of home management in 1934-35. She was married to Ray M. Smith in 1929. After leaving Iowa State she taught at the University of Maryland (1937-38) and was at Ball State College (1938-45). She was a writer and lecturer on home economics subjects for years.
