Winston Company, [1939.] 187p. In 1812, Dann Ballard trades nine animal pelts for a pair of hobnailed boots, not realizing that they are of the type worn by British infantrymen. Later, when he and his companion, John Sanders, encounter George Rogers Clark on his historic march against the British at Kaskaskia, the boots cast suspicion on the two friends until they prove their patriotism. Mrs. Nolan stresses only the Kaskaskia episode of the Clark campaign, introducing Clark and his followers just prior to their entering the Illinois Territory, describing their brief stay at the ruins of Fort Massac, their troubles in navigating the old Massac Trail northward, and the taking of Fort Gage at Kaskaskia. This novel presents a favorable image of John Sanders and a logical explanation for the sequence of incidents which casts suspicion on his character and causes many historians to question his loyalty. Text : To be based on a play by Lyman Denison Brewster (1832-1904), Major John Andre , written in 1875 or later. The complete text of Major John Andre , as edited by John Kirkpatrick, appears in Memos , pp. 283-317.
Derivation [#024] would have served as an overture to the opera. ( see Comment)
    Literature KirkC: 4B1; AG: . Memos , 83, 281-317. Swafford 1996, 167.
Comment The title is supplied editorially; Ives referred to Brewster's play as "Benedict Arnold" ( Memos , p. 83). In addition to Ives's intention to use his see memo on f2483) as the curtain raiser (ending, as the score-sketch does, with a diminuendo on a drum roll), John Kirkpatrick speculates ( Memos , p. 281) that Ives may have intended to include "Country Band" March , possibly as an entr'acte.

    Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

The original list was provided by long-time Ryegate resident, Millie Schanz it originated as a school project one of her grandchildren was involved in. There are two cemeteries at Ryegate, the Ryegate Cemetery and the Catholic Cemetery. The students visited both to gather headstone information. Rather than split the original list into two cemetery lists, the same coding used for the school project was used here:
    Ryegate Cemetery = P; Catholic Cemetery = C.
Millie Schanz and Fay Durham Hoffman have also provided additional information after the school project ended.
If you have photos you would like to have linked to this site, please contact me, I will be happy to scan them and return them to you.
If you use this list and find it useful, please email your thanks to Millie Schanz as she got me started on the project. This list is incomplete, please check back for updates. Headstone in the Ryegate Cemetery, P Headstone in the Catholic Cemetery, C

    . "A child asleep"
Text by Elizabeth Barret Browning (1806-1861)
Music by Edward Elgar How he sleepeth! Vision unto vision calleth,
While the young child dreameth on. Fair, O dreamer, thee befalleth With the glory thou hast won! Darker wert thou in the garden, Yestermorn, by summer sun. We should see the spirits rising Round thee, - were the clouds away. 'Tis the child-heart draws them, singing In the silent-seeming clay - Singing! - Stars that seem the mutest, Go in music, music all the day. Softly! softly! make no noises! Now he lieth still and dumb - Now he hears the angels' voices Folding silence in the room - Now he muses deep the meaning Of the Heav'nwords as they come. He is harmless - we are sinful, We are troubled - he at ease: From his slumber, virtue winful Floweth outward with increase - Dare not bless him! but be blesséd by his peace
