Francis Parkman Memorial, 1897-1907 (1905 and 1906) Location: Near Jamaica Pond Olmsted Park, Jamaica Plain, Boston Description: Francis Parkman (1823-1893), America's greatest narrative historian, was the first great writer who understood the character and motive of the Native Americans. When twenty three and a Harvard graduate with high honors, a dead shot with a rifle, and a master of tame and wild horses, he rode west to witness the wilderness firsthand and passed several months with the unconquered Sioux. He wrote The Oregon Trail and described his monumental France and England in the New World as "the history of the American forest; for this was the light in which I regarded it." French's depiction of an Iroquois standing in a pine forest could not be more fitting for Parkman. Tourism Links for Boston www.boston.hotel-discounters.com/

  • Pre-1630: Area around Jamaica Pond was a summer camp for Wampanoags who wintered near the Neponset River in Mattapan. Some feel that the name for "Jamaica" is the corruption of an Indian Chief's name from the 1640s. The Road to Dedham (today Centre Street) and the Dedham Turnpike (today Washington Street) are the main streets in town. Originally part of the Town of Roxbury (1631) the area that is now known as Jamaica Plain was settled slowly for its first forty years. Although not officially chartered as a town, Jamaica Plain is mentioned in the Roxbury town records.

to Albert S. Southworth (American, 18111894) and Josiah J. Hawes (American, 1808-1901),Francis Parkman (American historian, 1823-1893), daguerreotype, c. 1852
    http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/d/daguerreotype.html
d aguerreotype or Daguerreotype - The first commercial photographic process, introduced in Paris in 1839 by Louis J.M. Daguerre (French, 1787-1851). Each daguerreotype consisted of a copper plate , coated with silver , which when sensitized with iodine vapor, produced silver iodide. After a long exposure in the camera , the positive image on this surface was developed by mercury vapor a process very hazardous to the photographer. Daguerreotype images, most of which were portraits , require viewing from a certain angle , but their permanence was a tremendous achievement in the emergence of photography (pr. duh-gayr"oh-type')
Some examples: Felix Jacques Antoine Moulin (French, 1800-1868), Two Nudes Standing , c. 1850, daguerreotype, visible: 14.5 x 11.1 cm (5 11/16 x 4 3/8 inches), Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. Eduard Isaac Asser (Dutch, 1809-1894), Portrait of Johanna Ernestine, Rosa and Carel Asser , c. 1846, daguerreotype, gold-tinted, 10.8 x 8.2 cm, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands. Albert Sands Southworth (American, 1811-1894) and Josiah Johnson Hawes (American, 1808-1901), Lemuel Shaw , c. 1850, daguerreotype, 21.6 x 16.5 cm (8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches), Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY.

Celebrating Fine Art in the American Tradition
This page includes links to artists, authors, composers, philosophers, churchmen and scholars who represent, in our view, the foundations of art, science, and religion in America. Though made up primarily of pre-moderns, we have added a select few contemporary individuals whose exceptional contributions to American art make them worthy of inclusion. This page is very much a work in progress. If you would like to suggest additional individuals who we may have overlooked, please send us an email.
