FRANCIS PARKMAN'S
"SAVAGE PROLOGUE" TO AMERICAN HISTORY
by Patrick Killough [01/09/99] We non-natives who live in the mountains of the Carolinas, Georgia and Tennessee, remember and lament the tragedies which befell the Indians who preceded us. We remember discovery of gold in Dahlonega which removed the Cherokees along the Trail of Tears. We remind one another that high schools should think twice before calling their sports teams by names which some feel disparage native Americans, words such as Squaws or Braves. From the days of the northern voyages of Leif Ericson to Vinland and of Christopher Columbus much later and much farther south, Europeans pressed themselves upon Amerindians. The mighty colonizing powers encountered across two continents and the Caribbean Sea several levels of West Indies civilization and entered into many relationships: including trade, intermarriage, enslavement, war and extermination. Some historians of this cross-cultural encounter are more readable than others. Some better convey the texture of the landscape. Others evaluate the intentions of the colonial powers. Each author brings debatable presuppositions and prejudices. Francis Parkman Consider a classic work of early American history. In 1867 Francis Parkman (1823-1893) published

F. Parkman
Francis Parkman, the youngest of the group, and thoroughly modern in his method of investigation and presentation, was of Boston birth. His father was a clergyman; his grandfather, a prosperous merchant, had established the family fortunes upon a basis which gave the family financial independence. A love of outdoor life was early bred in the boy, whose health was delicate and who on that account allowed unusual freedom. He lived much in the open air and conducted youthful explorations in the surrounding woods.
Preparation.
During his student days at Harvard, Parkman was seized with the desire to write the history of the French and Indian War, and he determined to study the life of the Indian at first hand. Two years after graduation, he started from St. Louis, in 1846, upon the emigrant trail for the Dakota country. The summer that followed was replete with adventure, and productive of hardship from the effects of which the historian never recovered. But Parkman had lived among trappers and Indians; he had traversed the plains, hunted the buffalo, dwelt for weeks in the lodges of a tribe of Sioux, and gained by rough experience the knowledge that he sought. The narrative of his adventure is told in a fascinating volume, The California and Oregon Trail
France in the New World.

    Abstract:
British colonial officials considered the Kamba to be the premier martial race of Africa. The Kamba themselves appeared to embrace this label by enlisting in the colonial army in large numbers. This article explores the processes that transformed certain ethnic groups into martial races during the colonial era. It argues that the designation martial race had little to with specific cultural characteristics or precolonial military traditions. Martial stereotypes were an index of the changing political economy of recruitment. The willingness of an ethnic group like the Kamba to serve in the army was based on the extent of its integration into the colonial economy. African societies were most martial when in a transitional stage of economic development, operating under the constraints of colonial rule.

Awakening a Dormant Culture: Franco-American Writers and Composers
By Juliana L’Heureux
Back to Juliana's Writings Until very recently, a literary void created by generations of cultural neglect has permitted others to define French-American history of New England. Today, Franco-Americans are assimilating into 21st century New England establishment without leaving much of a cultural footprint of their own. Sadly, the only evidence this French speaking culture leaves behind are the miles of stoic brick and mortar buildings evident in almost every industrial New England town or city. These unlikely structural memorials are the equivalent of industrial "caves", repositories where hundreds of thousands of French speaking mill workers from Canada worked to create affluence for New England textile moguls. Between the time Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635) wrote his exceptional maps, letters and journals from New France and today, only handful of writers have successfully described the Franco-American experience. Not surprising, most people today don't know what a Franco-American is or even that this culture exists. Although French Jesuit missionaries, like Father Sebastian Rale (1652-1724) wrote zealously about their extraordinary experiences, even these factual accounts were re-invented by the American writer Francis Parkman (1823-1893), author of

"Historiography," historian Richard Jensen says, "is the study of how historians deal with the past." He continues: "The methods and the philosophical assumptions that historians have used have not always been explicit in their work. But these methods and assumptions have, just the same, determined how they select what seems to have been important and how they interpret the enormous mass of information available on American politics." Though Jensen is specifically discussing U.S. political history, his comment applies to all history. "History" is not an exact record of what happened in the past. Rather, it is the product of the research, analysis, and, yes, biases of historians. In this course students will be introduced to the ways in which the history of the United States has been written since the beginning of the country's history. In short, our focus will be on the history of the writing of American history.

Buried Antiques: Canadiana Book Collecting
The story of printing in Canada goes back to 1751, when a New Englander, Bartholomew Green, brought his printing press to Halifax. The Halifax Gazette was the first newspaper to be published in Canada. The first printing to be established in Quebec was not until 1764, which had a late start in contrasts to our Americans who started publishing in 1640. Newspapers were imported too, English and American. They came not very quickly but seemed to have interested a number of people. The early presses were used to print handbills, forms, pamphlets, and even small books for the local authors. While readers found it difficult to buy books in Canada, there was even less opportunity for authors to have them published here. By 1815 there were a few private libraries that mainly consisted of classical, religious, and political writings gathered without special regard for edition or other factors important to Canadiana book collecting in this field. The period from 1800 to 1847 was call the golden age of discovery where sailing ships were searching for the northwest passage in the Artic by Franklin, Ross, Parry, Lyon, Back, Simpson, and Rae.
