by Georg Feuerstein (For a beautiful poster of Patanjali available from YREC, click here No one knows anything about the life of Patanjali, the compiler of the Yoga-Sûtra which is the classical text on Râja-Yoga. According to native Indic tradition, he was the same person who also wrote a widely respected Sanskrit commentary—the Mahâbhâshya— on Pânini’s Ashtâdhyayî , a famous work on grammar. Some also attribute to him various medical treatises. Patanjali the grammarian lived c. 200 B.C.E. However, this traditional identification is questionable. Internal evidence in the Yoga-Sûtra suggests that it was composed c. 100-200 C.E. The curious thing is that the Sûtra nowhere mentions Patanjali as its compiler, and the first person to attribute this classical work on Yoga to him was Vâcaspati Mishra, the tenth-century author of the Tattva-Vaishâradî commentary on the Sûtra.

Introduction
The greatest classical text from the yoga school of Indian philosophy is the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali , written in the second century BC. These "threads" on yoga or union, are extremely terse, stating concisely and often precisely, essential points or techniques. Originally these teachings were oral and were explained and interpreted by commentaries from a teacher guiding the student. This meditative discipline of liberation is called raja or royal yoga or the yoga of the eight steps, which may be listed as follows:
  • 1. Restraint: nonviolence, not lying, not stealing, not lusting, and nonattachment 2. Observances: cleanliness, contentment, discipline, self-study, and surrender to the Supreme God 3. Posture or physical exercises 4. Breath control 5. Sublimation or withdrawal from the senses 6. Attention

    L'autore
  • Yama (armonizzazione delle relazioni interpersonali);
  • Niyama (armonizzazione delle sensazioni interiori);
  • Asana (bilanciamento degli impulsi nervosi opposti);
  • 9. Patanjali's Eight-fold Path
    A guide for living the right life, according to the teachings of Patanjali. Patanjali and His Eightfold Path of Yoga

    Patanjali and His Eightfold Path of Yoga
    Sherry Roberts To perform the boat posture simply to get a flatter tummy is missing the boat, according to Patanjali. Often called “the father of yoga,” Patanjali was the guy who codified his thoughts and knowledge of yoga in The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali. In this work, Patanjali compiled 195 sutras or concise aphorisms that are essentially an ethical blueprint for living a moral life and incorporating the science of yoga into your life. Although no one is sure of the exact time when Patanjali lived and wrote down his sutras, it is estimated this humble physician who became one of the world’s greatest sages roamed India somewhere between 200 B.C. and 200 A.D. In a world where we reduce nearly everything to quick tips and sound bites, Patanjali seems to fit right in with his brief 195 guidelines to enlightenment. But in the case of Patanjali, simplicity is deceptive. In fact, scholars still don’t agree on what Patanjali meant in some of his sutras. The Yoga Sutra is considered the fundamental text on the system of yoga, and yet you won’t find the description of a single posture or asana in it. This is a guide for living the right life. Essentially, Patanjali says, you can’t practice asanas in yoga class, feel the stretch, and then go home to play with your kids, cook a meal, yell at your employees, and cheat on your taxes. There is more to yoga than that — yoga can help you cultivate body, mind, and spiritual awareness.

    B OOK 1. CONCENTRATION
    1. Assuredly, the exposition of Yoga, or Concentration, is now to be made. The Sanskrit particle atha, which is translated "assuredly," intimates to the disciple that a distinct topic is to be expounded, demands his attention, and also serves as a benediction. Monier Williams says it is "an auspicious and inceptive participle often not easily expressed in English." 2. Concentration, or Yoga, is the hindering of the modifications of the thinking principle. In other words, the want of concentration of thought is due to the fact that the mind here called "the thinking principle" is subject to constant modifications by reason of its being diffused over a multiplicity of subjects. So "concentration" is equivalent to the correction of a tendency top, diffuseness, and to the obtaining of what the Hindus call "one-pointedness," or the power to apply the mind, at any moment, to the consideration of a single point of thought, to the exclusion of all else. 3. At the time of concentration the soul abides in the state of a spectator without a spectacle.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is universal in the manner of the Bhagavad Gita, including a diversity of standpoints whilst fusing Sankhya metaphysics with bhakti or self-surrender. by Georg Feuerstein
    Rochester, Vermont: Inner Traditions International, 1989. Paperback, 179 pages, $14.95 (CA sales tax $1.09; shipping $3.00)
    The Yoga-Sûtra ("Aphorisms on Yoga"), authored almost 2,000 years ago, is the single most important Sanskrit work on Hindu Yoga. Feuerstein offers a faithful word-by-word rendering together with a lucid exposition of the important aspects of Patanjali's ideas. Both the translation and the accompanying commentary are outstanding in their accessibility for the contemporary student of Yoga. "Georg Feuerstein's [book] is ideally suited to help the floundering reader [of sûtras ]. Feuerstein pays thorough attention to Sanskrit roots and classical nuances of meaning but is open to fresh approaches. His enchantment with Indian thought is apparent, but he seems unhampered by sectarian ties. He appreciates predecessors and contemporaries yet questions them vigorously. Feuerstein's creative criticism may not bring rave reviews from the Yoga establishment, if there is one, because he challenges long-cherished assumptions about multiple consciousness, the eight limbs of Yoga, and Patanjali's link with Sâmkhya philosophy. But his courage and style will certainly encourage students of any tradition to continue to seek new insights in ancient text."—Mandira Haynes, Advanced Studies Program, Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco
