About
Patanjali's Yoga Sutras The Yoga Sutras were supposed to have been written by Patanjali sometime between the fourth century B.C. to the fourth century A.D. At this site I'm quoting from an English translation of the Yoga Sutras , entitled How to Know God: The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali . The sutras themselves are quite terse, but the authors (Prabhavananda and Isherwood) provide an extensive commentary on their meaning. PATANJALI'S ASHTANGA YOGA Background Of Ashtanga Yoga
The basis of the studies that we have undertaken is dependent on Yogadarshan of Patanjali. We will consider the different aspects of yoga while remaining under the guiding principles of Patanjal Yoga. The asanas, Pranayamas or the dharana which we have studied earlier or the yam and niyam are based on the aphorism of Patanjali. Hence, we will acquaint ourselves with the fundamentals as stated by Patanjali first Ashtanga Yoga
Yoga has its roots dating back 5000 years as described in Vedic Philosophy, Patanjali , great sage composed this path into a Darshan in his Book Patanjal Yoga Sutra. In which he has formulated Yoga as a Eight Fold path.
  • Yama
    * Ahimsa - A principle of non-violence
    * Satya - A principle of Truthfulness
    * Asteya - A principle of non - stealing
    * Brahmacharya - Continence * Aparigah - A principle of non-hoarding Niyama Shoucha - Purity * Santosh - Contentment * Tapa - Endurance * Swadhyaya- Self study * Eshwar Pranidhan- Dedication Asana - A stable and comfortable posture which helps attain mental equilibrium.

    PATANJALI Traditionally Patanjali is considered the author of the fundamental text of the Yoga : the Yogasutra The little which is known about Patanjali is legendary and full of contradictions. Mythologically he is considered like an incarnation of the god serpent Sesa , that surrounds and supports the universe in form of the Cosmic Ocean. Although the Yogasutra dates between century II before Christ and century VI after Christ, nevertheless, not yet has been able to determine clearly the identity of its author nor the exact date of its composition. Both questions (identity of the author and date of the composition) are united closely and are possible sufficient arguments to think that the work is in fact a text that stayed "alive" during several centuries, until its first commentary was published; for that reason, Patanjali could have been, more than an only author, a school or the leader of a compilation school and exhibition of the Yogadarshana , adapting skillfully the inductive techniques of chaman origin, to a philosophical context next to the Samkhya HOME

    PATÂÑJALI Tradicionalmente Patâñjali es considerado como el autor del texto fundamental del Yoga : los Yogasûtra Lo poco que se conoce de Patâñjali es legendario y está lleno de contradicciones. Mitológicamente se lo considera como una encarnación del dios serpiente Sesa , que rodea y sostiene el universo en forma de Océano Cósmico. Aunque los Yogasûtra datan entre el siglo II antes de Cristo y el siglo VI después de Cristo, sin embargo, aún no ha podido determinarse claramente la identidad de su autor ni la fecha exacta de su composición. El autor primero de los Yogasûtra podría identificarse con Patâñjali , el filólogo hindú del siglo II a.C. Patânjali el gramático es el autor del “Gran Comentario” ( Mahâbhâsya ) a la “Glosa Crítica” ( Vârttika ) que Katyâyana hizo a la Gramática sánscrita de Pânini (Zimmer, H. "Filosofías de la India") Para argumentar esta teoría, además de utilizar el mismo nombre de autor y de mostrar un dominio extraordinario del sánscrito, en los dos textos se encuentran claras semejanzas, como la exposición de la doctrina del sphota , de muy poca difusión;

    Mark I. Vuletic
    This paper was written for a seminar in mysticism taught by Neal Grossman at The University of Illinois at Chicago in Spring, 1996 Proponents of mysticism sometimes offer the alleged uniformity of mystical experiences across time, distance, and culture as evidence of the epistemological value of the insights into reality one supposedly acquires from having such an experience. Obviously, to assess the claim to its fullest extent would require a thorough examination of all representative mystical texts - far beyond the scope of a single paper - and a detailed consideration of several epistemological issues regarding criteria of evidence and parsimony. However, a preliminary step towards full assessment can be made through consideration of two representative mystical texts from as radically different cultural contexts as can be found, and a survey of some of the epistemological issues involved in assessing what kind of evidence, if any, they offer for the ontological accuracy of the mystical experience. This paper will attempt to offer just such a preliminary analysis. The first text I will consider is a collection of yoga sutras

    The Yoga Sutras - III
    THE YOGA SUTRAS - III PATANJALI AND THE YOGA SUTRAS Almost nothing is known about the sage who wrote the Yoga Sutras. The dating of his life has varied widely between the fourth century B.C.E. and the sixth century C.E., but the fourth century B.C.E. is the period noted for the appearance of aphoristic literature. Traditional Indian literature, especially the Padma Purana, includes brief references to Patanjali, indicating that he was born in Illavrita Varsha. Bharata Var-sha is the ancient designation of Greater India as an integral part of Jambudvipa, the world as conceived in classical topography, but Illavrita Varsha is not one of its subdivisions. It is an exalted realm inhabited by the gods and enlightened beings who have transcended even the rarefied celestial regions encompassed by the sevenfold Jambudvipa. Patanjali is said to be the son of Angira and Sati, to have married Lolupa, whom he discovered in the hol-low of a tree on the northern slope of Mount Sumeru, and to have reduced the degenerate denizens of Bhotabhandra to ashes with fire from his mouth. Such legendary details conceal more than they reveal and suggest that Patanjali was a great Rishi who de-scended to earth in order to share the fruits of his wisdom with those who were ready to receive it. Some commentators identify the author of the Yoga Sutras with the Patanjali who wrote the Mahabhashya or Great Commentary on Panini's famous treatise on Sanskrit grammar sometime between the third and first centuries B.C.E. Although several scholars have contended that internal evidence contradicts such an identification, others have not found this reasoning conclusive. King Bhoja, who wrote a well-known commentary in the tenth century, was inclined to ascribe both works to a single author, perhaps partly as a reaction to others who placed Patanjali several centuries C.E. owing to his alleged implicit criticisms of late Buddhist doctrines. A more venerable tradition, however, rejects this identification altogether and holds that the author of the

    The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali
    The Light of the Soul:
    The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Alice A. Bailey (1927, Lucis Trust)
    Translated by the Tibetan Master Djwhal Kuhl from Sanskrit The Tibetan Master(DK) has said that the Sutra's of Patanjali will be the system used to train disciples in mind control for the next 7,000 years (p. 326, Discipleship in the New Age, Vol. 2 by Alice A. Bailey). A careful study of these sutras will help kriyabans appreciate the incredible and ingenious blend of spiritual techniques contained in Kriya Yoga. Most of the principles in Kriya can be found by meditating on the deeper meaning of the sutras. What makes this translation special is that DK translated the meaning behind Patanjali's writings rather than a literal translation which is impossible from Sanskrit to English. DK was able to tune into the thought form behind the words and render them into English. Now you can use these Sutras to write your own commentaries as you do dailly seed thought meditation on each Sutra. I highly recommend the illuminating commentaries of this book. The entire book with commentaries is also online at Netnews.
