The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
Introduction, Commentaries, and Translation
click here to go direct to the translation Over fifty different English translations of the Yoga Sutras are extant, standing as a human testament to how Universal Truth is celebrated in terms of a rich diversity. Rather than the common and external type of knowledge (emanating from book knowledge), the following translation and commentary are a result of an intimate familiarity and direct experience both with an authentic yogic tradition and with western culture, psychology, and language that have been refined, tested in fire, and integrated for over thirty five years of intense practice (sadhana). This work is dedicated toward revealing the universal message of authentic yoga that the sage, Patanjali, first wrote down approximately 2000 years ago. Patanjali is not the inventor of yoga, but rather yoga's most popularly known scribe. What has become known simply as the "Yoga Sutras " (sutra means thread) or almost equally as common, as the "Yoga Darshana" (the vision of Yoga), is actually a compendium of an ancient pre-existing oral yoga tradition consisting of both practical advice and theoretical context. The most accepted format of the

Lord Patanjali is the sage of Yoga, for it was he who codified the path of Astanga Yoga in the Yoga Sutras about 2500 years ago. With this treatise of 196 terse aphorisms, Patanjali gave the gift of Yoga to all of humankind. The Yoga Sutras were but a part of his immense contribution as he also recorded complete works on Grammar and Ayurveda.

CONCENTRATION 1. Assuredly, the exposition of Yoga, or Concentration, is now to be made. The Sanskrit particle atha, which is translated "assuredly," intimates to the disciple that a distinct topic is to be expounded, demands his attention, and also serves as a benediction. Monier Williams says it is "an auspicious and inceptive participle often not easily expressed in English." 2. Concentration, or Yoga, is the hindering of the modifications of the thinking principle. In other words, the want of concentration of thought is due to the fact that the mind here called "the thinking principle" is subject to constant modifications by reason of its being diffused over a multiplicity of subjects. So "concentration" is equivalent to the correction of a tendency top, diffuseness, and to the obtaining of what the Hindus call "one-pointedness," or the power to apply the mind, at any moment, to the consideration of a single point of thought, to the exclusion of all else.

The Tamil Cities that Created Important Sanskrit Myths

    Introduction
In his paper, "The Changing Notion of ziSTa from pataJjali to bhartRhari", (in "Bhartrhari: Philosopher and Grammarian" edited by Saroja Bhate and Johannes Bronkhorst, first published in 1993) M. M. Deshpande writes, K. V. Abhyankar (1954:352) suggests that the southern grammarians knew the account of the transmission of the mahAbhASya and its recovery by candrAcArya from the south, and then they created the elaborate myths about pataJjali appearing in Chidambaram. However, this does not explain why pataJjali should have been regarded as an incarnation of zeSa, rather than some other divinity." (p.113 n.7) In his later paper, "Who Inspired pANini? Reconstructing the Hindu and Buddhist Counter-Claims", JAOS, 117.3, 1997, Deshpande writes, It would thus seem that the notion of pANini having been inspired by ziva may have developed in certain zaivite communities around the middle of the first millennium A.D. It was originally, in all likelihood, independent of the Chidambaram mythology associating ziva naTarAja with pataJjali incarnated as AdizeSa. David Dean Shulman (1980: 122ff.) discusses extensively the complex relationships of AdizeSa with various different south Indian zaivite shrines, most of which have little to do with his character as the grammarian pataJjali. In fact, I have a suspicion that bhartRhari, calling pataJjali AdiziSTa, may have been later [mis]understood as referring to AdizeSa." (p. 453)

    Yoga Sutra
Yoga as a system of thought and practice has a primary reference to the philosophical system that flows from the teachings of the ancient Indian Yoga philosopher, Patanjali Maharishi Patanjali is believed to have compiled his Yoga Sutra around the 3rd or 4th century BC but archeological evidences and the study of ancient scriptures suggest that yoga was practiced in ancient India as early as 3000 BC.
In spite of the Yoga Sutra being by far the most definitive text on the philosophy of classical yoga, very little is known about Patanjali himself. In fact, the identity of this sage scholar is still being debated in academic circles. All that one might say about him is that he was a great philosopher and grammarian. Some also believe him to have been a physician and attribute a certain medical work to him. But even if such a medical treatise did exist, it has been lost to us through the passage of time. Scholars tentatively put his time somewhere around three centuries before Christ and though the date of the Yoga Sutra 's composition is also a controversial issue, place it within that broad time frame.

    P R E F A C E Dearest Brothers and Sisters,
You may know that Yogiraj made quite a few scriptual commentaries. Most were published by his revered disciple Sri Panchanon Bhattacharya through Arya Mission Institute. Of these commetaries Sri Yukteshvar had said: "Gurudeva (Lahiri Mahasaya)used to publish his works in a very condensed form. His usage of the language was the contemporary slang and Hindi and Urdu, and so his disciples used to record them in the same language. We also know that many of us used to get instructions and answers to our doubts through letters also. Yogiraj used the language easily comprehended by the masses."
Brij the Translator has finished work on translation of Commentary of Patanajali Yoga Sutras done by Yogiraj Sri Sri Lahiri Mahasaya (originally published by Sri Panchanon Bhattacharya, Arya Mission Institute Calcutta and later republished by Sevayatan Ashram). I bow to the feet of my brothers and sisters in Kriya from all lines and traditions. N.W.(kashi)
