A. B. ("Banjo") Paterson (1864-1941)
Brief Biography
Andrew Barton Paterson was born at Narambla Station near Orange in New South Wales in 1864. He grew up near Yass in NSW and attended school in the small town of Binalong, and later in Sydney. He started out as a lawyer's clerk before being admitted as a solicitor. After the publication of The Man From Snowy River and Other Verses in 1895, he became something of a literary celebrity in Australia. He travelled widely throughout the country and also was war correspondent in the Boer War in South Africa, and covered the Boxer Rebellion in China. He was later to become editor of the Sydney Evening News and then the Australian Town and Country Journal . At the outbreak of World War I he travelled to Europe to cover the conflict but was unable to get to the front in France. Frustrated by this he returned to Australia and joined the Remount Service which supplied horses for the Australian cavalry in the Middle East. After the War he returned to Sydney, journalism and writing poetry and prose. Paterson is best remembered as the the author of Waltzing Matilda - Australia's unofficial national anthem.

National Context
Our findings on the national situation were that:
  • the national infrastructure in music lacked coherence, funding and equity across domains and sectors; resources were scattered, often hidden and not always well served by traditional library mechanisms; adoption of new technological opportunities was piecemeal and unsystematic.
Moreover, there are some key incentives for addressing generic questions about Australian national information infrastructure and access to resources:
  • vast geographical distances and a small population; a poorly developed philanthropic culture; and a changing competitive grants environment favouring linkages across institutions and sectors.
These factors drive the need for cooperative and cost-effective solutions to national infrastructure problems.
International Context
We also surveyed international digital music initiatives Register of International Projects

A B. "Banjo" Paterson , born 1864 And his ghost may be heard as it sings in the Billabong
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?". . . Few Australian Bush Poets are as well known as A. B. (Andrew Barton) "Banjo" Paterson (1864-1941), author of the famed “The Man from Snowy River” and “Waltzing Matilda.” Beloved by Australians (he is featured on the $10 bill) his bush ballads celebrate the beauty of the outback and the courage and spirit of its inhabitants. Paterson grew up in the Australian bush and immortalized its people and places in poems. Paterson wrote poems, novels, memoirs, commentary, and other prose. Poems The Man From Snowy River

Above the noises of the camp,
The roll of wheels, the horses' tramp.
The challenge echoed over all
"Halt! Who goes there?"
A quaint old figure clothed in white,
He bore a staff of pine,
And ivy-wreath was on his head.
"Advance, O friend," the sentry said, "Advance, for this is Christmas Night, And give the countersign." "No sign or countersign have I. Through many lands I roam The whole world over far and wide. To exiles all at Christmastide From those who love them tenderly I bring a thought of home. But, Lord, you can fix 'em up if you want to. Did you ever hear about Henery, that used to drive for old John Bull about Henery and the elephant?" Alfred was chauffeur to a friend of mine who owned a very powerful car. Alfred was part of that car. Weirdly intelligent, of poor physique, he might have been any age from fifteen to eighty. His education had been somewhat hurried, but there was no doubt as to his mechanical ability. He took to a car like a young duck to water. He talked motor, thought motor, and would have accepted I won't say with enthusiasm, for Alfred's motto was 'Nil admirari' but without hesitation, an offer to drive in the greatest race in the world. He could drive really well, too; as for belief in himself, after six months' apprenticeship in a garage he was prepared to vivisect a six-cylinder engine with the confidence of a diplomaed bachelor of engineering.
