("Banjo") Paterson (1864-1941) Andrew Barton Paterson was born in New South Wales in 1864. After the publication of The Man From Snowy River and Other Verses in 1895, he became something of a literary celebrity in Australia. Paterson is best remembered as the author of Waltzing Matilda - Australia's unofficial national anthem. A film was made of his poem, The Man From Snowy River. Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922) Henry Lawson was born on the goldfields in New South Wales on 17 June, 1867, the son of a Norwegian seaman and an activist for women's rights. Lawson suffered from deafness and was often teased as a result. He led a troubled life but is one of Australia’s best-known and loved early writers. There are many collections of his poems and short stories. Henry Handel Richardson (1870 – 1946) Henry Handel Richardson was the pen name of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson. She was born in Melbourne, Victoria where she attended Presbyterian Ladies College between the ages of 13 and 17. This experience was the basis for her novel The Getting of Wisdom (***). Driving etc. Australian Currency and its history With the establishment of the first colony of New South Wales in 1788, the need for currency soon became apparent. Convicts received no wages and the early settlers and military personnel had their needs supplied from communal stores. With only a small quantity of English and foreign coins brought with the First Fleet, most of the dealings in the first few years consisted of bartering, with rum being the main means of exchange. Handwritten notes of credit, issued by government officials and backed by the English treasury, were a common form of currency, but these were subject to counterfeiting and devaluation. The earliest currency used was English money, and also the Spanish dollar brought by the early ships. Because of the shortage of English money, and to prevent the Spanish dollars being taken back on the ships, Governor Macquarie had their centres cut out and they became known as 'holey dollars', while the cores became 'dumps'. In 1813 they had "New South Wales 1813" stamped on them, with "Five Shillings" on the reverse side. The 'dump' had "New South Wales 1813" stamped on their cleaned and smoothed surface with "Fifteen Pence" on the reverse side. In 1817 the Bank of New South Wales was established. The first issue of banknotes comprised five shillings, ten shillings, one pound and five pounds and paper tokens for one shilling, one shilling and sixpence, two shillings, and two shillings and sixpence. In 1825 the British Government imposed the sterling standard throughout its Empire and English coins were minted in Australia.

'Banjo' Paterson and novelist Rosa Praed I nterconnecting relationships between major families in the small world of colonial Australia are commonplace to historians researching nineteenth-century material. But literary links? Who would expect a family connection between Australia's great balladist, 'Banjo' Paterson, and Rosa Praed, the first Australian-born novelist to achieve a significant international reputation? The link was Nora Murray-Prior, one of the 'hidden' pioneer women of our colonial era, who nurtured her network of relatives through letters. Australian Poetry When I think of great Australian poet's the names A. B. 'Banjo' Paterson Henry Lawson and Dorothea Mackellar spring to mind. This is just a very small collection of their works. Andrew Barton ('Banjo') Paterson Andrew Barton Paterson (1864 - 1941) was most famous for his stirring Bush Ballads . 'The Banjo', the name of a racehorse his father once owned, was the pen-name used by Paterson when he began contributing verses to The Bulletin, an influential newspaper of the time. His first big success was 'Clancy of the Overflow' which appeared in 1889. Paterson was born 17 February 1864, at Narambla, New South Wales. He was the son of a Scottish immigrant and the eldest of seven children. His younger years were spent near Yass in NSW. He attended Sydney Grammar School, but left at the age of 16. Paterson sat unsuccessfully for a university scholarship and entered a lawyer's office as an articled clerk - later becoming managing clerk and then a partner in the firm, Street and Paterson. Banjo Paterson was commissioned by the Sydney Morning Herald and became a successful journalist and war correspondent during the Boer War in 1899, and the Boxer Rebellion in China, in 1901.
