Did you know? Background on Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore
Facts: Birth/Death Dates: 1823-1896 Nationality: English Profession: Librarian Religion: Catholic Coventry Patmore was a librarian by profession, and originally an Anglican by creed, but he later converted to Catholicism. Inspired by his new religion, he composed some of his best religious poetry, prolific in both quality and quantity. To fellow lyricist Francis Thompson, Patmore was indeed "the greatest genius of the century." Together, both Patmore and Thompson brought English religious poetry to unexpected, perhaps unsurpassable heights. From childhood to grave Patmore believed himself obligated to celebrate married love, "the more serious importance of which had been singularly missed by most poets of all countries" he once said. As time went on, this theme became spiritualized in his mind. There can really be only one story of happy married love, and when he finally adopted a form for it, it ultimately resembled the scenario of a novel by Anthony Trollope. This quality, the trivial realism of the narrative of The Angel of the House

See Phulkian States Gazetteer (Lahore, 1909). PATIENCE, the name given to certain card-games played by a single person. Although known for centuries, they have seldom been mentioned by writers on playing-cards, and the rules have for the most part been handed down orally. There are two main varieties; in one luck alone prevails, since the player has no choice of play but must follow strict rules; in the other an opportunity is given for the display of skill and judgment, as the player has the choice of several plays at different stages of the game. The usual object is to bring the cards into regular ascending or descending sequences. The starting card is called the “ foundation,” and the “. family “ (sequence) is “ built upon. it. In other varieties of Patience the object is to make pairs, which are then discarded, the game being brought to a successful conclusion when all the cards have been paired; or to pair cards which will together make certain numbers, and then discard as before. There are hundreds of Patience games, ranging from the simplest to the most complicated. ‘ See Jarbart’s Games of Patience in De laRue’s series of handbooks (1905); Patience Games, by “ Cavendish “ (London, 1890); Gyclopaedia of card and Table Games, by Professor Hoffmann (London

My childhood was a vision heavenly wrought;
High joys of which I sometimes dream, yet fail
To recollect sufficient to bewail,
And now for ever seek, came then unsought:
But thoughts denying feeling, every thought
Some buried feeling's ghost, a spirit pale, Sprang up, and wordy nothings could prevail And juggle with my soul; since, better tought, The Christian's apprehension, light that solves Doubt without logic, rose faith that hope involves And joys, like stars, which, though they not illume This mortal night, have glory that dissolves And strikes to quick transparence all its gloom Compensation That nothing here may wants its praise Know, she who in her dress reveals A fine and modest taste, displays More loveliness than she conceals. Evening scene
Text by Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore (1823-1896), from "The River".
Set by Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934), 1906. [satb] The sheep-bell tolleth curfew-time; The gnats, a busy rout, Fleck the warm air; the dismal owl Shouteth a sleepy shout; The voiceless bat, more felt than seen, Is flitting round about. The aspen leaflets scarcely stir: The river seems to think: Athwart the dusk, broad primroses Look coldly from the brink, Where, list'ning to the freshet's noise, The quiet cattle drink. The bees boom past, the white moths rise Like spirits from the ground; The gray flies hum their weary tune, A distant-dream-like sound; And far, far off to the slumb'rous eve, Bayeth an old guard-hound. After running into the ground with what had seemed a promising lead, I find that the book, at least, does not appear to have a Latin version or a quote at all (search on "world" at http://www.geocities.com/aninfinitemoonlight/GIFic8.html if this wasn't badly pirated text, it looks like dialogue that could have used brightening). If this isn't a case of misunderstood dialogue, I still haven't solved the riddle, but I followed a long false lead, so to save someone else the effort: In Shakespeare's ``Pericles,'' Thaisa speaks these words at ll. 1249-50:
