Leo Edwards and the Secret and Mysterious Order of the Freckled Goldfish By Betsy Byars
In 1935, at age seven, I sent off two two-cent stamps to Leo Edwards in order to become a member of the Secret and Mysterious Order of the Freckled Goldfish. The club took its name from Edwards's book Poppy Ott and the Freckled Goldfish. For my two stamps I was to receive a membership card adorned with a comical picture of the freckled goldfish (in top hat), containing the club's rules and regulations along with Leo Edwards's autograph and a coveted club button. I was a little worried because the invitation to club membership had said, "Any boy can join who wants to," but my fears proved to be groundless. I was living in a cotton mill community in rural North Carolina at the time. Pleasure reading was considered a sort of frivolity there, and most of the kids in my school were marking time until they became fourteen and could go to work in the mill. So there was no hope of my organizing a local chapter of the club as other readers were doing. The local chapter activities were reported in a special section called "Our Chatter-Box." Chapters sent word of their libraries and their fund raisers, and one group even had their own robes with the freckled goldfish on the front and back. I would have given a lot to have had one of those robes.

Our Current Areas of Interest

One of the interesting aspects of our work together is that we're always open to new ideas. We're addicted to learning, and we can't seem to get enough of it! This means that we're always finding new areas of interest to feed our learning habit. We'd like to share with you our current areas of interest.

... Marilyn Herasymowych I'm currently fascinated by three areas: evolutionary psychology, cognitive science, and organizational culture. I'm convinced that these areas hold clues to why organizational learning is so difficult, and how we might use this information to help organizations to change. Evolutionary psychology and cognitive science are rocking the backbone of western thought and philosophy, and have wide-reaching implications for how we understand the human condition. These implications reach deeply into how we understand leadership, consultation, and culture, especially in organizations. Currently, I'm reading:

Unknown Romance Novelists
This is part of the A Celebration of Women Writers , but I have few clues about these women. They are the authors of novels I have from 1850s-1940s, or were taken from lists in old novels or catalogs. The Romance and Mystery writers of today are their literary grand-daughters. One of them is the great-grandmother of a friend - after her husband died, his family refused to help her, so she supported and educated her six children by writing. If you have any information about authors, please let me know : titles, birth or death dates, biographical information. If you have books by authors I haven't listed, I would welcome that too. Eventually the novels will be analysed for what they reflect about the women who wrote and read them, but for now I'm just collecting them. Also see:

COMPENDIUM OF HISTORY, REMINISCENCE AND BIOGRAPHY. JOSEPH S. PEDLER Joseph S. Pedler was born on a farm in Gray county, Ontario, May 30, 1857. He was the eldest of two sons in the family of Samuel and Sarah Sparks Pedler, His mother died in 1861, when he was only four years old. His father remarried, and of this marriage eleven children were born. Out of this large family, Joseph and a half-brother, H. W. Pedler, were the only ones who came to the United States.
Mr. Pedler spent his earlier years on a farm, receiving but little schooling, and in his seventeenth year, he started out in life for himself, learning the blacksmith trade. It is a curious fact that as far back as the family history could be traced, some member of the Pedler family has been a blacksmith or iron worker. Mr. Pedler first received forty dollars per year and board.
In 1879, he emigrated to Newton, Iowa, and worked at his trade there for about a year, going to Loup City, Sherman county, Nebraska; in May, 1880. In the following July, he was married to Miss Mary A. Thompson, in Grand Island, Nebraska, coming to the Loup City home immediately after the marriage.
Mr. Pedler was elected sheriff of Sherman county in the fall of 1885, and after serving in that capacity for two terms, was deputy sheriff for two years. While he was serving as sheriff, there was considerable excitement over the shooting of Editor B. L. Richardson of "The Loup City Northwestern" by Editor O. B. Willard of the "Sherman County Times."
