61. Tracer | Success Stories
Jean Pedler, of Bristol, Indiana, wrote to The Northern Echo's weekly Tracer columnin an attempt to find her cousins, Elizabeth, Margaret and Alan Stephenson.
http://www.thisisthenortheast.co.uk/the_north_east/leisure/tracer/success.html
If you have successfully traced a friend or relative please let us know. Read the success stories here : Just a note to say thanks for publishing my request for help finding the family of my late grandfather George Roberts. George was posted from the UK to New Zealnd during WW2 and we lost touch with the family after his death in 1963.
After 6 years of searching, yesterdays article was read by the family of George's brother and I received the first telephone call at 3am NZtime from a cousin. I have since received 2 more telephone calls from cousins who have read the story.
George died 10 years before I was born so I never knew my grandfather, but now I can get answers to all my questions, and there are quite a few questions! My children now have a heritage and I can now find out everything I wanted to know about my family.
THANKS for your help and for making it such a great start to 2003

This gentleman is my grandfather and he and my grandmother divorced during or just after the Second World War. He was in the DLI with the rank of SGT according to my mother's birth certificate. I would like very much to find him, or people who know or knew him. Mostly for my mother's sake as she has never known him. She herself tried to trace him several years ago unsuccessfully. However she lives in the South of England and I live in the North East and am hoping to be successfull through this newspaper. Last but not least I hope my grandfather met my grandmother in Surrey, he was a groom at the Sandhurst College before the war.

100. That is of no help at all, Mr Took!
Mr Took ) As you have heard expressed, Option A is very similar to what exists now and the argument is that it does not work, and if you have a problem, you go towards a specialist service, and this leads on to what Mr Farmer was saying about needing to test out the specialist service to see whether it is the right one.
Mr Linton
101. There are two questions being asked. One is what is the long-term solution, and the other is what do you do in the short term if there are these people who are both dangerous and untreatable. One answer is to say that they are actually treatable, but that may not be the view taken by psychiatrists in a particular situation, so if you accept for a moment that there are people who are dangerous and untreatable and cannot legally be detained at the moment, what is your short-term solution to that?
Mr Farmer ) I would certainly advocate working on a community management approach in identifying those areas. I think if the Home Office have identified the numbers, they presumably have quite a good idea about where these people are. It may be instructive to work with an assertive community management approach again which could be set up reasonably quickly and could be followed and monitored very closely and researched very closely which may possibly address the short-term issue, but would also contribute understanding towards the longer-term problem.

Opinion is split over the risks and benefits of ECT
Patients are not being given enough information or being offered the chance to opt out of a controversial treatment for depression, says a charity. Mind said electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) could leave patients suffering a number of side-effects - and that patients were frequently not told about these prior to treatment. But a separate study on ECT by American scientists said the therapy had a bad reputation in the past, but was now an effective means of combating depression. ECT involves passing a current through an anaesthetised person's brain to produce a seizure with the aim of relieving severe depression.
It is clear that people are still not being given enough information about temporary and permanent side effects
Margaret Pedler, head of policy development at Mind Mind officials claim patients are left with permanent memory loss, anxiety, lack of concentration and forget skills such as counting or music learned before the treatment. Out of over 400 people surveyed by Mind, 84% said they had suffered adverse side effects.

MIND AND THE MENTAL HEALTH ACT 2: ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT WHAT MIND WANTS Enforceable legal rights to an assessment of needs for treatment, care or support arising from mental health problems;
appropriate care and treatment to meet assessed needs. A RIGHT TO ASSESSMENT This would apply to
  • people who are not already in contact with mental health services
people who are in contact with services who need more – or different - help.
Why is it needed? Like many people I have had experience of asking for in-patient treatment, not having either an assessment or my request granted and subsequently having to be compulsorily detained. (MindLink member responding to questionnaire on Mental Health Act reform) Too many people are turned away when they ask for help for their mental health. In a survey by the National Schizophrenia Fellowship, over one in three people (35 per cent) had been turned away when seeking help and one in four people (25 per cent) seeking hospital admission had been refused. This can lead to compulsory detention and treatment when their mental health deteriorates.
