Samuel Pepys, 1633-1703
The first great modern bureaucrat, a founder of the professional navy, a famous `accidental' historian. Pepys became secretary to his cousin, Admiral Edward Mountagu , in 1660. His massive `secret' diary has become one of the largest sources of information on the Restoration. A brief excerpt, from a visit to Stonehenge and Old Sarum `[10-June-1668 (Wednesday)]
So came to Hungerford... A bad mean town. ... to Salisbury , by night; but before came to the town, I saw a great fortification, and there light, and to it and in it; and find it prodigious, so as to fright me to be in it all alone, it being dark. I understand it since to be that that is called Old Sarum. Came to the town... [11-June-1668 (Thursday)]
... our guide, and I single to Stonehenge, over the plain and some prodigious great hills... Came thither, and find them as prodigious as any tales I ever heard of them, and worth going this journey to see. God knows what their use was. They are hard to tell, but yet may be told. ... So back... to the church, ... and I did go in, and saw very many fine tombs, and among the rest some very ancient, of the Montagus (Pepys).

Samuel Pepys 16331703. His Diary 1660-1669
http://www.rspu.ryazan.ru/~rogatin/pepyjour.htm
Samuel Pepys 1633-1703 His Diary August 18, 1660 … By and by comes my wife to tell me that my father has persuaded her to buy a most fine cloth at 25 s. a yard, and a rich lace, that the petticoat will come to L 5, at which I was somewhat troubled, but she doing it very innocently, I could not but agree. I did give her more money and sent her away. Nov. 1, 1660. Mr. Christmas, my old school-fellow… did remember that I was a great Roundhead when I was a boy, and I was much afraid he would have remembered the words that I said the day the King was beheaded (that, were I to preach upon him, my text should be – “the memory of the wicked shall rot”)… (The Great Fire of London.) So down, with my heart full of trouble, to the Lieutenant of the Tower, who tells me that it begun this morning in the King’s baker’s house in Pudding Lane, and that it hath burned St. Magnus Church and most part of Fleet Street already. So I down to the waterside…. …And among other things, the poor pigeons, I perceive, were loath to leave their houses, but hovered about the windows and balconies till they were, some of them burned, their wings, and fell down. Having stayed and in an hour’s time see n the fire rage every way, and nobody, to my sight, endeavouring to quench it, but to remove their goods, and leave all to the fire, and having seen it get as far as the Steel Yard, and the wind mighty high and driving it into the City; and everything, after so long a drought, proving combustible, even the very stones of churches, and among other things the poor steeple by which pretty Mrs. – lives, and whereof my old school-fellow Elborough is parson, taken fire in the very top, and there burned till it fell down; I go to White Hall, and there up to the King’s closet in the Chapel, where people come about me, and I did give them an account dismayed them all, and word was carried to the King. So I was called for, and did tell the King …. that unless his Majesty did command houses to be pulled down nothing could stop the fire

Diarist, naval administrator, and MP. He is best known for his diary, kept from 1660 until 1669, which provides a remarkable documentary Of Charles II's London. It was written in Thomas Shelton's system of shorthand, in six volumes, and was first deciphered in 1819. Samuel Pepys was born on 23rd February 1633 over his father's tailor's shop in Salisbury Court between Fleet Street and The Thames. He moved to Brampton from London because of his health and fears of The Plague (from which several of his brothers died.) The Pepys family originated from Cottenham although Samuel was born in London, the son of a tailor. One of his relations, Paulina Pepys, was married to Sir Sydney Montagu, which explains the connection between Samuel and Sir Sydney's son. Pepys lived at Brampton for part of his boyhood and attended the Huntingdon Free School. He became Montagu's secretary in in 1660, after serving him in more minor capacities. He lived for a time in his house in Brampton which he inherited from his uncle and which still stands.

Samuel Pepys (1633-1703)
Pepys career in government began as secretary to Sir Edward Montagu under Charles II after which he was named clerk of the kings ships and a member of the navy board in 1660. By 1686 he was secretary of the Admiralty. His career in the British Navy was not without distinction, but his accomplishments will forever be overshadowed by his famous "Diary."
Pepys' Diary describes, in frank detail, his life and the times during the rule of Charles II between 1660 and 1669. Written in shorthand (due to his failing sight), the undabridged "Diary" was first translated and published between 1819 and 1822.

SAMUEL PEPYS (1633-1703)
Memoirs of Samuel Pepys. . . Comprising His Diary from 1659 to 1669 , deciphered by the Reverend John Smith . . . from the original short-hand manuscript in the Pepysian Library. Ed. by Richard, Lord Braybrooke. London: Henry Colburn, 1825. 2 volumes. Samuel Pepys, secretary to the Admiralty, began his famous diary on the eve of the Restoration. After his death, the diary was deposited in the Library of Magdalene College, Cambridge (where it remains today) and was not published until over a century after his death, because it was written in a cipher. Clearly, Pepys never intended his words to be read by anyone but himself. The result is a memoir that is candid, unhampered by the conventions and morals of his era, and free from shame and self-censorship. Early in the nineteenth century, George Neville, Master of the College and brother of Lord Braybrooke, determined to have the diary decoded, and enlisted the services of John Smith, Curate of Barham and a graduate of the College. From 1819 to 1822, John Smith patiently and painstakingly deciphered the six volumes of the diary, and under the editorship of Lord Braybrooke a part was published in 1825 in two large volumes. The complete journal was not issued until 1893. The volumes exhibited here are in their original boards, with original paper labels and uncut. These were the personal copies of the scholar who deciphered them, with the inside front cover of both volumes bearing his signature: John Smith, Curate of Barham.
