Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) Samuel Pepys kept a diary for nine years, between 1660 and 1669. He wrote his diary in shorthand, which is a type of code. This was because it was very personal and there were many things written in it which he did not want other people, (especially his wife), to know about! Luckily for us, Samuel Pepys was a very observant man and his diary gives a very clear picture of what life was like in the 1660's. Also, Pepys was quite well connected. His cousin, Edward Mountagu, was a high-ranking naval officer, later to be given the title of 1st Earl of Sandwich by King Charles II. It was Mountagu who found a position for Pepys at the Navy Office in the City of London. Pepys proved to be an honest, hard-working man, with a talent for organization and a good eye for detail. He was promoted at the Navy Office as he showed himself capable of handling more responsibility. What makes Samual Pepys’ diary so special is that his cousin's position meant that he was able to be present at many important events, which, of course, he meticulously recorded in shorthand. For example, Pepys was aboard one of the ships which sailed to Holland to bring Charles II back to England. He attended King Charles II's coronation and he was also President of the Royal Society for a while. In fact, Pepys recorded everything in his diary. He gave vivid accounts of the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. It is from him that we are able to relive the theater of the period, as well as fashion and popular food and drink. His diary has been of invaluable assistance to historians and has given much pleasure to its many readers.

She is reckoned worth £80,000!" ( Pepys' Diary Samuel Pepys was born on February 23, 1633 into a family of limited means, but through wit and political skill became one of the most prominent politicians of his age. He attended St. Paul's School in London and afterwards departed for Cambridge where he gained a reputation as a great drinker. He was married at the age of twenty-two to a fifteen year-old French girl, Elizabeth, with whom he lived whilst serving under Edward Montagu, later the First Earl of Sandwich. It was while working for Montagu that he began his diary, which was to become the most important historical record of Restoration Britain. However, it was written in code (presumably to disguise dubious passages detailing his onanism and the like), and was not deciphered until the nineteenth century. Pepys began work at the Admiralty where he excelled, setting himself to work with great vigour. His tact and intelligence soon won him the favour of his employers. He became a Member of Parliament and implemented many far-reaching reforms, including the Ship Building Act, which restored the British naval ascendancy which had been threatened by the French and Dutch.

He began his diary in 1660, the year that Puritan rule ended and the Restoration period began. After the seriousness and sobriety of the Puritan years, Londoners now took great pleasure in attending the reopened theatres, where they enjoyed the comedies of John Dryden and other Restoration dramatists. Pepys enjoyed London life to the full, and he wrote down practically everything he thought, felt, saw, or heard. He describes the city's churches, theatres, and taverns, its streets and homes, and even the clothes that he and his wife wore. Samuel Pepys was born in London on 23rd February, 1633. His father was a tailor. Young Pepys probably owed his education to his father's cousin, Sir Edward Montagu (the "My Lord" of the diary), who later became first earl of Sandwich. Pepys went to St. Paul's School in London and then to Cambridge University. At 22 he married a 15-year-old French girl, Elizabeth St. Michel. By 1655 Montagu had become an Admiral, and Pepys was a Clerk in his service. In 1660 Pepys was on the ship that brought Charles II back to England. Pepys had been poor up to this time. After the Restoration his career advanced rapidly, and he became secretary of the Admiralty.

His father, John, was a tailor, his mother Margaret Kite was sister of a Whitechapel butcher and Samuel was fifth in a line of eleven children. By origin the Pepyses were country folk who, from the 13th century onwards had held land around Cottenham in Cambridgeshire, including the manor of Impington. In 1618 Paulina Pepys married a brother of the 1st Earl of Manchester, Sir Sydney Mountagu, who in 1627 had acquired the house and estate of Hinchingbrooke, near Huntingdon. Samuel was sent off to Huntingdonshire in 1642 to live with his uncle, Robert Pepys of Brampton, who served in the household of his relatives, the Mountagus of Hinchingbrooke. Samuel attended the grammar school at Huntingdon, which counted amongst its ex-pupils not only Oliver Cromwell but also Edward Mountagu, the young squire of Hinchingbrooke. The latter, 8 years older than Samuel, inherited the Hinchingbrooke estate from his father, Sir Sydney, in 1644. Samuel Pepys returned to London after the civil war and entered St Paul's School. In his diary of November 1st 1660 he recalled how he rejoiced in the execution of Charles I. His future employer, Edward Mountagu, while a supporter of the parliamentary army, broke with his army colleagues over the execution and left politics for several years. Pepys meanwhile attended Magdalene College Cambridge, which today houses his Diary.
