Pepys, Samuel 1633-1703, English public official, and celebrated diarist, b. London, grad. Magdalene College, Cambridge, 1653. In 1656 he entered the service of a relative, Sir Edward Montagu (later earl of Sandwich), whose secretary he became in 1660. That same year he started as a clerk in the navy office and by 1668 he was an important naval official and owned a considerable estate. In 1672 he was made secretary to the admiralty. He sat in the Parliament of 1679, but he was charged with betraying naval secrets to the French in the same year. He was briefly imprisoned in the Tower but was vindicated and freed in 1680. In 1684 Pepys was reappointed secretary to the admiralty and was made president of the Royal Society . The accession of William III forced him into retirement, where he wrote his (1690). Pepys left his valuable library, including his diary in cipher, to his nephew John Jackson and in turn to Magdalene College, Cambridge. The diary was partially deciphered and in 1825 was first published; an almost complete text was edited by H. B. Wheatley (10 vol., 1893-99). An intimate record of the daily life and reflections of an ambitious, observing, and lusty young man, Pepys's diary extends from Jan. 1, 1660, to May 31, 1669, when failing eyesight forced him to stop writing. The diary gives a graphic picture of the social life and conditions of the early Restoration period.

I ntre 1660-1661 trupele otomane au devastat intreg tinutul actualului judet Satu Mare.
In 1660, turcii distrug castelul fortificat al familiei Bathory, construit in 1532 in Simleul Sivaniei. In acest timp in alte parti ale lumii apar societatile savante, academiile. In 1635 Academia franceza (Academie Francaise) si in 1660 Societatea Regala din Londra (Royal Society of London). In 1690 (!), Domnitorul Constantin Brancoveanu il aduce in Muntenia pe Antim Ivireanul. In În 1691, Antim Ivireanul ia conducerea tipografiei bucurestene, prima carte tiparita fiind "Învataturile lui Vasile Macedoneanul catre fiul sau Leon".

Full Text Born in London during the reign of Charles I, whose execution he witnessed, Samuel Pepys lived through the Interregnum, the Restoration of the Monarchy and the Glorious Revolution of 1688. He is known to later generations through his secret Diary, first published in 1825, in which he reported such events as the Plague and the Great Fire of London, and on everyday life in seventeenth-century England. But to his contemporaries he was admired as an extremely able administrator in the Admiralty Office. Pepys was elected FRS on 15 February 1665; and during his presidency of The Royal Society (1684-86) Newton's Principia was published. 'Whareas for the sooner dispatch of the shippes now in docke and them that are to come in their roome his Royall Highness hath directed the Impresting of One hundred Shipwrights. These are to pray and require you to enter One hundred Such Shipwrights as the Master Shipwright of His Ma ts yard at chatham shall by his notes direct you to enter, or shalbe sent down by Mr John Shish who is impowered to press some here in the River. ...'
On 31 May 1669, convinced that he was damaging his eyesight, Pepys had discontinued his shorthand diary ('which [is] almost as much as to see myself go into my grave') and prepared himself for blindness. His eyesight did in fact improve, although he never resumed the Diary, and the signature of the present document is large and bold, although the ink is slightly faint.

A ambição e o egoísmo destruiram-lhe todas as capacidades.

The History of The Round House - Chitterne
Samuel Pepys Samuel Pepys, who lived from 1633-1703, was a naval administrator and diarist. He was most famous for his diary which he wrote between 1660-69. In his diary of 1668 he states that having visited Salisbury, he and his party wished to proceed to Bath. They started with a guide at about 6 o'clock and travelled across the Salisbury Plain until night, when by a happy mistake they were carried out of their way to a "town", which he later calls Chitterne. Here they found accommodation at an inn, "by and by to bed, glad of the mistake because it seems, had we gone on as we pretended, we could not have passed with our coach and must have lain on the plain all night." He relates that they found their beds, "good, but lousy: which made us merry". They then took the landlord of the inn as guide to Bath and arrived there without further trouble. The inn mentioned in his account is widely believed to have been the "White Hart", which stands on the junction of the B390 with the Tilshead road, in the village. It has been a private house for some years but it's name "White Hart House", serves as a reminder of it's origins and most famous customer. Back

But now we have Samuel Pepys's diary available as a weblog. This raises an interesting possibility: will I find it more accessible in bite-sized semi-daily chunks? Whenever I have run across quotations from the diary, I've found it fascinating. This version, however, excises the naughty bits. Pepys : ...Blessed be God, at the end of the last year I was in very good health, without any sense of my old pain, but upon taking of cold.1 I lived in Axe Yard having my wife, and servant Jane, and no more in family than us three.... The condition of the State was thus; viz. the Rump, after being disturbed by my Lord Lambert, was lately returned to sit again. The officers of the Army all forced to yield. Lawson lies still in the river, and Monk is with his army in Scotland. Only my Lord Lambert is not yet come into the Parliament, nor is it expected that he will without being forced to it. The new Common Council of the City do speak very high; and had sent to Monk their sword-bearer, to acquaint him with their desires for a free and full Parliament, which is at present the desires, and the hopes, and expectation of all.... About the Diary Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) kept a diary for nine years, from 1660 to 1669. We present selected extracts here. Noteworthy entries include the execution of Maj.-Gen. Harrison , the whipping of his page boy and a report of a blood transfusion between dogs performed before the Royal Society. Some entries are just plain odd ; still others are confounding The Encyclopedia Britannica has an entry on Pepys . A short essay on his life, and the historical significance of his diary, can be found at Magdalene College (from where Pepys graduated in 1654). The full text of a (bowdlerised and abridged) 1825 edition is available from Bibliomania The Shorter Pepys is a modern, un-bowdlerized edition. mjs@beebo.org statistics
