Historical Note
Edwin Lawrence Godkin was born and educated in Ireland and came to the United States in late 1856. He founded the politcal review The Nation in 1865, becoming its first editor. In 1881 he sold The Nation to Henry Villard, owner of the New York Evening Post. The Nation then became a weekly edition of the Post. Wendell Phillips Garrison then became the editor of The Nation. He was a powerful political writer who frequently attacked Tammany Hall and advocated civil service and currency reform.

Biography
Born in Chicago on 2 May 1870, John Corbin was the fifth child of Calvin Rich Corbin and Caroline Elizabeth Fairfield Corbin. At the age of 18, he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and entered Harvard College in the fall of 1888. He graduated with a B.A. degree in English in 1892 and a M.A. in 1893. His graduate study focused on Shakespeare and dramatic literature. From 1893 to 1894, he worked as editor of Outing magazine. Corbin attended Baloil College at Oxford University, where he turned his master's thesis into a publishable monograph, for one year. In the spring of 1895, Scribner's in New York published The Elizabethan Hamlet Corbin returned to the United States and served as an instructor at Harvard for the 1896-1897 school year. He then resigned from this position and went to work as an assistant editor of Harper's Magazine . He wrote his first dramatic criticism for Harper's Magazine and Harper's Weekly . During his time at Harper's , Corbin met Amy Foster. They married on 1 November 1899 and remained together for the next sixty years. In 1900 Corbin went to work for the

Lowell : James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was an American poet and literary critic, well remembered for his humorous poetry, such as "The Biglow Papers" (1848). Portsmouth : a seaport in New Hampshire. King of the Fatherland : The fatherland is Great Britain. "The first of all her dead that were to be" : This quotation has not been identified. Help is welcome. the famous journal of Dean Swift to Stella : Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), the Irish satirist is best known for Gulliver's Travels (1726). Stella was his close friend, Esther Johnson, to whom he addressed Journal to Stella noble saying of Plato : Plato (about 428-347 BC) was a Greek philosopher, author of numerous dialogues featuring Socrates, his teacher. The quotation comes from Book V of "Laws," in which Socrates does not appear: "for there is no greater good in a state than that the citizens should be known to one another." (Research: Jack V.
