Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje (1876-1932) was one of the foremost African leaders of his generation in South Africa. As the first general secretary of the African National Congress (ANC), founded in 1912, Plaatje was a prominent political spokesperson, interacting regularly with government officials and other leading whites in both South Africa and Great Britain. Plaatje was much more than a political figure, however. Prior to the formation of the ANC, he was a court interpreter at Mafeking, where he became caught up in the famous siege during the Anglo-Boer War (1). After the war he became editor of two successive newspapers, Koranta ea Becoana (Bechuana Gazette) and Tsala ea Becoana (The Friend of the Bechuana), both published in Setswana and English. As one of the band of pioneering African newspaper editors, he viewed his role as that of a "mouthpiece" for his people. It was this role that brought him to prominence and led to his selection as ANC general secretary. Plaatje was a significant writer. His political tract

Introduction Sol Plaatje: A Brief Biography Sol Plaatje was an African political leader and writer of the early twentieth century who challenged the inequality of settler colonialism in South Africa. Born in 1875 of a Baralong kholwa (Christianized) family, he received only three years formal education but continued to study privately, working as a courier in Kimberley and then as an interpreter and clerk in the Mafeking magistrate’s court. His diary of the siege of Mafeking in the South African War vividly records black experiences. As editor of Koranta ea Becoana (1901-8) and Tsala ea Batho (1910-15), he highlighted issues of concern to Africans, such as racism, injustice and exploitation. This raised his national profile and in 1912 he was a founder and first Secretary-General of the South African Native National Congress. He strongly opposed the 1913 Natives’ Land Act which restricted Africans to the most barren parts of the country, publishing

The Siege of Mafeking:
11 October 1899 - 17 May 1900
The experiences of Sol T Plaatje
(Please be patient while some of the following graphics load, as they may take a while - thank you) Solomon Plaatje, in his diary, records very graphically how the siege affected the Tshidi Barolong residing in Mafikeng. The notion that it was a white man’s war is dispelled because the inhabitants of the Tshidi Barolong stadt (town) suffered even more hardship than the white population of Mafeking. Colonel R.S.S. Baden- Powell’s town guard included, in addition to the White volunteers, the Cape Boys and the Black Watch, who were all non-Barolong. The black population of the besieged towns swelled by more than 2 000 people who returned from work on the diamond and gold fields. (below): Mafikeng from Mafeking On 11 October 1899 a Boer force of several thousand men, supported by about 300 Rapulana Barolong, under General Piet Cronje surrounded the two neighbouring towns of Mafeking (occupied by approximately 1500 whites) and Mafikeng (a Tshidi Barolong stadt of approximately 5 000 under Chief Wessels Montshiwa). The siege of the two towns lasted until 17 May 1900, a total of 217 days. The Tshidi Barolong contingent played a vital role in the defense of the towns and by the end of the siege about 500 of them had been armed. They were divided into regiments under the command of Motsegare, Badrile and other headmen under the general leadership of Lekoko and Sergeant Abrams. The area they were responsible for was the defence of Mafikeng and southwestern perimeter of the defense network.
