S olomon Thsekisho Plaatje
General Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was in his day a translator, journalist, editor, author, musician, politician and community leader. From a simple rural upbringing he went on to become a leading figure, at times taking on the Union government almost single-handedly in defense of his people’s constitutional rights. All his life he stood by what he thought was morally right. Recognition for his achievements came long after his death in the form of an honorary doctorate in literature from the University of the North-West in 1998. The Berlin Mission Society mission station where Sol Plaatje was baptised on 14 January 1877 by Rev. Carl Wuras. PNIEL MISSION STATION The Berlin Mission Society mission station at Pniel near Barkly West where Sol Plaatje lived with his elder brother, Simon, and received a basic primary education up to Std 3 level. PLAATJE, Soloman Tshekisho (187 S ol Plaatje was born near Boshof in 1876 and educated at Pniel on the banks of the Vaal River. He worked at Kimberley as a postman, wrote and passed the Cape Civil Service Certificate and moved to Mafikeng (then Mafeking) as court interpreter. His diary of these days was later published as The Siege of Mafeking (1984). Between 1904 and 1912 he edited the Tswana-English weekly Koranta ea Bechuana before moving to Kimberley where he established the newspaper Tsala ea Batho . He wrote numerous articles for newspapers, wrote two works on the Tswana language, worked for the African National Congress (ANC) as general correspondence secretary (in which capacity he travelled to England in 1914 as part of a delegation protesting the Land Act 1913 ), and translated A Comedy of Errors and Julius Ceasar into Tswana. A house was presented to him in Kimberley by the community he served. He died in 1932. The house at 32 Angel Street was donated to Plaatje in 1929, by the black community of Kimberley, as a token of their gratitude towards him for all his community service. The house was situated in the residential area then known as the Malay Camp. Today the area is part of the commercial centre, with the Plaatje House surrounded by a number of commercial buildings, a five-storey apartment block and some municipal buildings. The house is also situated near the main road to Cape Town. Although the house itself is of no real architectural value, the front garden, facade and two front rooms were declared a national monument in 1992.

Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was born on October 9, 1876 on a farm called Dornfontein in the north-western part of the Orange Free State, some thirty miles north east of Kimberley. He came from a family with a tradition of contact with Christianity that goes back to the 1820's. Later he went to Pniel near Barkly West in the Cape where he attended school. At the age of 9 and 10 he attended a Church of England mission school in Beaconsfield, some 18 miles from Prilel. This was in the late 1880's. Then back at Pniel he was progressing far beyond the other pupils; so be began to receive additional private instruction from the missionary, Ernest Westphal and his wife. At 13 he passed the Cape Education Department's standard 4 examinations: almost certainly the first pupil at Pniel to have achieved this. In February 1892 he was appointed a pupil/teacher, a post he held for two years . In March 1894 Plaatje left the mission station to take up a job in the Post Office in Kimberley as a letter earner a highly sought-after job because it was one of the relatively few avenues of opportunity open to Africans for employment. At 17 he seemed to have been well prepared for a life outside the limited confines of the Pniel mission. On March 1, 1894 Plaatje began work as a letter carrier in the Kimberley Post Office. The Kimberley Post Office had been the first in the Cape to employ Africans as messengers and letter carriers. This was in 1880 when the Post Office found it impossible to secure reliable and inexpensive white labour. This provoked the anger of the whites who felt threatened by this act. Plaatje remained in his job for four and a half years. This afforded him the opportunity to improve his command of the English language.

Man’s Point of View of a White Man’s War, éd. Life in South Africa, Before and Since the European War and the Boer Rebellion

Africa House Forgotten Writers: Sol Plaatje
Who was Sol Plaatje?
The first series of forgotten writers starts with South African author Sol Plaatje, polemicist, novelist, political leader, linguist and translator in the first half of the twentieth century. Plaatje stands alone as the giant of his time, though he can be compared with the great African newspaper pioneers in South Africa of this time. Plaatje started out with a modest education: 3-5 years of schooling (sources differ on this point), yet he not only became fluent in 10 languages, but wrote one of the first English-language novels on the African continent, translated works of Shakespeare into Tswana (this work, sadly, is lost), started several newspapers, helped to found the African National Congress, and campaigned tirelessly against racial policies of his time. Despite his Dutch surname, he was a Barolong. Possibly his greatest work is Native Life in South Africa Plaatje's book makes depressing reading when one thinks of what could have been. But at least today we have his example of the towering achievements of which an African even a person of extremely limited education is capable. Here are some alternative editions (both of these out of print in September 1998): Other works of his worthy of mention are:
  • Mhudi (the novel referred to earlier), a love story set in a world in which traditions were being torn down by the arrival of powerful foreigners the Boers

e.tv and Current Affairs Films are proud to launch Sol Plaatje- A man of
our time, a 52 minute documentary exploring the life and work of one of
South Africa's greatest writers, teachers and statesmen.
Sol Plaatje, like many black people at the time, suffered the depredations
of war along with the British troops. He also recorded his experience in a
diary, writing the only first hand account of black man's experience of the
Boer War. During the Seige, he worked as a court interpreter and journalist, filing dispatches for English newspapers. The professional experience he gained, in spite of having to work within an environment of overt racism, launched him on a remarkable career. His was a life of firsts: * the first Black editor of the first Tswana language newspaper in the country;
