Edgar Allan Poe
(Boston, 1809 - Baltimore, 1849)

Notes:
This daguerreotype of Poe was taken in November 1848, less than a year before his death. Poe was 39. Poe had become engaged in Providence to the poet Sarah Helen Whitman and apparently presented the daguerreotype to her to mark their betrothal. The engagement lasted barely a month, but Whitman retained the picture for many years as a treasured keepsake. Whitman thought the image "did not represent him truly," but she said Poe considered it "the best likeness he ever had."
In the same studio, four days earlier, Poe sat for the darkly intriguing "Ultima Thule" daguerreotype, one of the best-known literary portraits of the 19th century. The Providence daguerreotypes stand as important pieces of visual biography, produced during a tumultuous week that began with Poe's attempted suicide in Boston on Nov. 5 and ended with his engagement to Whitman on Nov. 13.

Silence actually has fifteen lines but seems to belong here. The "dear name" concealed within An Enigma can be found by reading the first letter of the first line, the second letter of the second line, etc. to the end of the sonnetshe was a poet and friend of Poe's.
To Science
Science! True daughter of Old Time thou art!
Who alterest all things with thy peering eyes.
Why preyest thou thus upon the poet's heart,
Vulture, whose wings are dull realities?
How should he love thee? or how deem thee wise,
Who wouldst not leave him in his wandering
To seek for treasure in the jewelled skies,
Albeit he soared with an undaunted wing?
Hast thou not dragged Diana from her car?
And driven the Hamadryad from the wood
To seek a shelter in some happier star?
Hast thou not torn the Naiad from her flood,
The Elfin from the green grass, and from me
The summer dream beneath the tamarind tree?
An Enigma
"Seldom we find," says Solomon Don Dunce,
"Half an idea in the profoundest sonnet.
Through all the flimsy things we see at once
As easily as through a Naples bonnet
Trash of all trash?how

The Story: Edgar Allan Poe [1809-1849] had a fascination with cryptography. Besides numerous references to secret writings in some of his poems and stories such as The Gold-Bug , he conducted his own "cryptographic challenge" that was published in Alexander's Weekly Messenger beginning in December, 1839. For this series of articles Poe challenged his readers to submit their cryptographs to him, asserting that he would solve them all. For the next six months Poe published solutions to the ciphers submitted by his readers, and shared his views on the nature of cryptography. Poe's association with the Messenger ended in May, 1840, but he took up the subject approximately a year later in an article he wrote for

EAF Authors: Edgar Allan Poe
(1809-1849) Born in Boston to parents who were actors, Poe was adopted by the Allans of Virginia. As a young man, Poe contributed to and worked as an editor for a number of magazines, including Southern Literary Messenger New York Review , and Burton's Gentleman's Magazine . A collection of his stories, Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque , was published in Philadelphia in 1840, shortly after his marriage to his cousin, Virginia Clemm. Taking up residence in New York, Poe began the Broadway Journal with Charles F. Briggs, continuing it through a second volume despite his partner's abandonment. After his wife's death of consumption ten years into the marriage, Poe was engaged twice, neither relationship resulting in a union. Poe's dissipated lifestyle led to his expulsion from the University of Virginia, his later withdrawal from West Point, the severing of his relationship with his benefactor, Mr. Allan, loss of employment on several occasions, and eventually, his death of a fever on October 7, 1849.
