Slavni pisci alkoholièari Edgar Allan Poe (1809.-1849.) Dr. E. N. Gruber Amerièki pisac koji je ¾ivio u devetnaestom stoljeæu. Bio je vi¹e gladan nego sit, roditelje je izgubio jo¹ u djetinjstvu. Povremeno je zapadao u te¹ka depresivna stanja koja je"lijeèio" alkoholom (posebno brandy) i opijumom. O¾enio se trinaestogodi¹njom roðakinjom koja nakon godinu dana umire od tuberkuloze pluæa (isto kao i njegova majka). Bio je egocentrièna i nesocijalna liènost. Alkoholni delirij umjetnièki obraðuje u svojim djelima, koja su prepuna priviðenja, hladna i patolo¹ka, ma¹tovita i mistièna. Smatrao je da je poezija "ritmièko stvaranje ljepote", koje je samo po sebi svrha, ¹to je realizirao u lirskim ostvarenjima (Gavran, Anabel Lee), koje su èesto graðene na efektima proze, napetosti i osjetnih senzacija. U njegovim djelima, uz halucinantnu razigranost ma¹te, ima i hladne proraèunatosti, posebno u tzv. tales of ratiocination - prièama novog tipa, èiji je on tvorac, a koje su èitave napravljene na logièkim operacijama. U formi detektivskog romana ta æe knji¾evna vrsta postati popularna tek kasnije. Cijeli je ¾ivot bio neshvaæen i nesretan. Emerson ga je zvao "zveketalo" Èitajuæi djela E.A. Poa mo¾emo bolje razumjeti i osjetiti svu usamljenost, strah i nemoæ kao i prazninu ¹to ih ostavljaju alkohol i droga.

Fue criado por John Allan, quien lo adopto y de quien tomo su apellido, y que se dedicaba al comercio de tabaco en Virginia. Edgar Allan Poe recibio su educacion en Inglaterra y en Norteamerica. El joven Allan fue expulsado de la Universidad de Virginia por jugador, ademas de que tenia una actitud deplorable, tenia muchas deudas producto de sus apuestas. Posteriormente se marcho a Boston, luego de romper relaciones con su padre adoptivo, para publicar en esa ciudad su primer volumen de poesías "Tamerlán" en 1827 en el que se notaba la influencia byroniana. De la etapa posterior a la publicación de este libro se sabe que prestó servicio en el ejército, para huir de la pobreza, bajo el nombre de Edgar Allan Perry, en el que permaneció dos años. En 1829 aparecio su segundo libro de poemas, Al Aaraf, y se reconcilió con su padre, que le consiguió un cargo en la Academia militar, pero a los pocos meses fue despedido por negligencia en el deber; su padre adoptivo le repudió para siempre. Entonces fué cuando se inició su agitada carrera literaria.
