A product of Victorian times, she far surpassed societal expectations of women of her era and class. She was an accomplished botanical illustrator, a sheep breeder and farmer, a wife, and a conservationist greatly devoted to her home, the Lake District of England. Born in 1866 in London, to a wealthy Victorian family, (Helen) Beatrix was one of two children (she had a brother, Bertram). She was home schooled by governesses. As Bertram was sent away to private school, Beatrix was often alone. She always loved animals. Whenever possible, she smuggled mice, rabbits and hedgehogs into the house.

Fred Yates Beatrix Potter‘s life and art combine and complement each other. From an early age, she had many interests, including natural history, mycology, archaeology, fossils and farming, but always she liked to draw and record whatever she was studying. She was born on 28 July, 1866 at No. 2, Bolton Gardens, Kensington, and her early life was typical of many Victorian children with wealthy parents. First a nannie and then a series of governesses presided over the nursery on the third floor and she recorded in her journal that this was preferable to formal schooling. It allowed her to develop her own interests without being forced into a regulation mould. These interests began with the many animals she and her brother Bertram kept in their nursery, varying from newts, frogs, bats and a snake to the more usual rabbit Beatrix called Peter Piper. The creatures were drawn and painted exhaustively. As Beatrix grew older, her early studies were widened to include different aspects of the countryside. She could not resist what she called 'the irresistible desire to copy any beautiful object which strikes the eye ... I must draw, however poor the result!‘ The best opportunities for sketching came during the family holidays. These were taken in April, two weeks at a seaside resort, and during the summer, three months in the country. At first Scotland was the choice, at Dalguise in Perthshire, but from 1882 it was mainly the Lake District. Beatrix discovered the beauty of fungi at Dalguise, learning much about them from the local postman, Charles Mclntosh. She became knowledgeable about obscure species and studied their propagation. Eventually she had over 250 drawings of fung

Updated: 16 May 2002 A Tribute to Beatrix Potter The Blue Plaque at Gorse Hall Estate, Stalybridge, celebrates the site of Gorse Hall which was built by Beatrix Potter's maternal grandparents, John and Jane Leech. Beatrix often visited Gorse Hall with her mother, Helen Leech. It was unveiled on the 23rd November 1999, by John Heelis OBE, great nephew of Beatrix Potter's husband, William Heelis. Gorse Hall, Stalybridge John and Jane Leech bought the Gorse Hall estate in 1835 and built a new mansion, also Gorse Hall in 1836. This is located further up the hill, not far from the Old Gorse Hall. Early Life John and Jane Leech, like many prosperous families of the age, had five daughters and three sons. One of the daughters, Helen Leech, married Rupert Potter, son of Edmond Potter, another local successful businessman of the day, who ran Dinting Vale Printworks near Glossop. The happy couple married at the Unitarian chapel in Hyde in 1863 when Helen was 24. They started married life in London and spent their first three years in Upper Hartley Street. In 1866, when Helen was expecting Beatrix, her first child, they moved to Bolton Gardens, a four storey house in Kensington, which was to become Beatrix Potter's nursery, playroom, and eventually her studio.

Beatrix Potter 1866-1943 Beatrix at age 16 Beatrix Potter was born in England and lived there all her life. She is known today for her wonderful children's stories, especially Peter Rabbit. From childhood, Beatrix was an avid student of Nature. She drew and painted all the animals she could find, and loved painting mushrooms. Her two strongest interests were always being in the natural world and painting what she saw there. Beatrix filled many sketchbooks and kept a journal all her life. Beatrix was financially self-supporting at a time (early 1900s) when women were not really supposed to be. With money earned from her books she eventually bought land and became a farmer. During her later years she was widely respected throughout England as an expert on fungi (a mycologist). She was also a respected watercolor painter; she painted many landscapes and over 270 watercolors of mushrooms (see below).
