She was elected President of the Herdwick Sheep Breeders' Association at one time and left over 4000 acres of land as well as several farms to the National Trust when she died. Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) Beatrix Potter came from a wealthy middle-class family and was educated by a governess at home; as an only daughter, she had no playmates for much of the time (a younger brother had more formal schooling), but she enjoyed various pets, writing and drawing. Her parents evidently sought to be conventional in every respect and chiefly benefited their children by neglecting them. Carpenter says her journals reveal her to be very independent and determined from the beginning, contemptuous of Victorian convention, including both religious and class strictures (279).
Every summer of her childhood was spent in the Lake District, where Beatrix and her younger brother wandered at large collecting plants and other natural artifacts, making pets of smaller wild animals, and drawing everything - both were natural artists.
As an adult, Potter showed little interest in socializing or marriage; instead, she frequented the Natural History Museum near her London home and worked at her art. In 1896, an uncle tried to get some serious attention for her botanical drawings of mushrooms and her biological theories (she correctly described the symbiotic relationship of fungus and algae that creates lichens), but to no avail. The botanical establishment of her day was not prepared to credit her accurate understanding of the nature of lichens and the propagation of mold spores. Both ideas, now known to be true, were dismissed in part because they flew in the face of scientific orthodoxy and because of Potter's age (30) and gender (Golden, "Naturalist" 631).

    Potter, Beatrix
Beatrix Potter was born in South Kensington, London, as the only daughter of Rupert Potter, a wealthy rentier . His father's property came from the Lancashire cotton industry as her wife's. Potter spent a sheltered childhood with her brother Bertram, who was five years younger. She amused herself by painting, using specimens from the Natural History Museum or sketching the nature in the Lake District, where the family spent summer holidays. She never went to school, but was taught at home by a governess. As a young woman she still lived at her parent's house. From the age of fifteen until she was past thirty, she recorded her everyday life in her own secret code-writing.
In 1893 Potter wrote a letter to a young friend, Noël Moore, which was illustrated with drawings of animals and contained the first version of THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT. The book was privately printed in 1901, and then published by Frederick Warne and Co. Potter and one of the publishers, Norman Warne, engaged in 1905, but he died of leukemia only a month later. Potter turned back to her books as the one creative impulse left to her. "If it were not impertinent to lecture one's publisher - you are a great deal too much afraid of the public, for whom I have never cared one tuppenny button. I am

Bunny Lover and Land Preservationist Beatrix Potter (1866-1943)
When she was a child, Beatrix Potter actually owned a bunny named Peter. In fact, she owned two bunnies, a frog, lizards, a turtle, and several other pets, and many of them later became characters in her phenomenally popular children's books. Raised in a well-to-do and overprotective Victorian family, Beatrix relied on her brother Bertram and her pets to keep her company. She covered page after page with sketches of her personal menagerie and botanical drawings, but first put words with pictures in September 1893 when she wrote a letter to the ill child of her former governess. Telling the child that she didn't know what to write, Beatrix instead created a story about a mischievous rabbit named Peter and his family. Several years later, Beatrix decided to publish the story, and after it was rejected by six different publishers, she produced the book herself. Publisher Frederick Warne then agreed to publish The Tale of Peter Rabbit National Trust , and it was opened to the public in 1946. The

Beatrix Potter filled many sketch books with studies of all kinds of animals in characteristic poses and many of her landscapes can still be recognised today.
The first of her books, The Tales of Peter Rabbit, started as a story letter to Beatrix's friend, five year old Noel Moore in 1893. Peter Rabbit was eventually published as a book in 1902 and proved so popular that in the next ten years another fifteen books were published with 23 in total by 1930.
