Celebrating National Women’s History Month 2002 “Women Sustaining the American Spirit” In celebration of the many contributions that women have made to our history, Rhona Scoville has designed a bulletin board for the Palatka Library reflecting the accomplishments of women of diverse cultures and interests. Biographical highlights of Helen Beatrix Potter, Grace Hopper, Elizabeth Blackwell, women who fought in the Revolutionary War, and a bibliography of items available at the Palatka Campus Library are listed below. HELEN BEATRIX POTTER Mycologist, writer (1866 - 1943) She was the first child of Rupert and Helen Leech Potter, born July 28, 1866 in London, England. She is known today for her wonderful children's stories. Just about everyone is familiar with the tale of Peter Rabbit. During her later years she was widely respected throughout England as an expert on fungi, although the Royal Society did refuse to publish at least one of her technical papers. From many walks in the woods she amassed a set of detailed watercolors of fungi. The collection (some 270 completed by 1901) is in the Armitt Library, Ambleside, England. Around the time of her death in 1943 many of her notes, including her paper on spores, were burned during the bombing of London in WWII. She kept a private journal which wasn't published until 1966. The reason for this is that it was written in a code of her own invention. The code was broken by Leslie Linder, an engineer. Once the code was broken it took him seven years to decipher Beatrix Potter's journal. In the journal she details her attempts to have her theories and drawings noticed, usually to no avail.

Beatrix Potter (1866 - 1943) is famous for her illustrated children's story books, starting with The Tale of Peter Rabbit . But the idea of depicting animals dressed, and behaving, like humans, came from Randolph Caldecott's earlier illustrated books of nursery rhymes . Beatrix Potter's father was active in the art world (the painter Millais was a family friend), and bought the whole set of original pictures by Randolph Caldecott which had been used to produce The Three Jovial Huntsmen , and, in 1884, two of the original pictures for A Frog he Would A'Wooing Go. Two original pictures by Randolph, together with two other prints from his Picture Books, still hang in Beatrix Potter's House in Sawrey, Lake District, England.

Beatrice Potter and the Lake District
Without a doubt the number one destination for Britains headed out on holiday would be the Lake District in the North. It includes parts of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire and is highlighted by beautiful mountains, valleys, dark woods and great stretches of water including Lake Windermere, the longest lake in all of England. One of the great experiences is to take a ride up the lake on one of four steamers operated by British Rail that travel the lake on a regular schedule. One of the ports of call is at Bowness.
