There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

October 2001 Volume XII Number 1 To mark the National Library of Australia’s 100th Anniversary, the Library is conducting a 100th Birthday BookSearch, in association with The Australian , to identify the whereabouts of key items not yet held in the Library’s Collection. Every month between now and December, we’ll identify some items on our desiderata list. If you know where one of these items is, you can help us by buying the item if it is for sale, donating it if the item is in private hands, or simply letting us know of its whereabouts. This month, Ros McDonald searches for items not yet in our Collection. Rosa Campbell Praed
Reproduced from frontispiece of My Australian Girlhood: Sketches and Impressions of Bush Life by Mrs Campbell Praed
(London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1902) Few people have led a more extraordinary life than the Australian novelist and dramatist Rosa Praed (1851–1935). Born on a remote station on the Logan River in Queensland, she came to move among the squattocracy of colonial Brisbane, and eventually settled in bohemian London among many well-known political and literary figures of the time. Her private life was one of tragedy. She was estranged from her husband, two of her four children died in accidents, another in a mental asylum, and one committed suicide. These events, which she attributed to karmic retribution, may account for her lively interest in the occult and reincarnation.

Thanks to John Williams, Basilisk Bookshop, and Kerry Kulkens Magic Shop for allowing us to display various items as indicated in the text. Keith Richmond is an editor of both Aleister Crowley and Rosaleen Norton, and is working on a bibliography of Aleister Crowley. H uman responses to the mysteries of existence, and our attempts to gain some control over our environment, lives (and possibly afterlives) have been myriad. Indeed these have been so varied that the general terms we use to categorise them: religion, philosophy, mysticism, science etc. frequently prove inadequate when applied to specifics. Perhaps the vaguest - yet most widely used of these terms - is 'the occult.' In its common usage this phrase covers a diversity of beliefs and practices, ranging from humble forms of divination such as tea-leaf reading and cartomancy, through necromancy and witchcraft, to the highly sophisticated practices of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, whose (mostly Anglophone) members were expected to have a least a basic familiarity with Greek, Latin and Hebrew, not to mention mathematics and other 'conventional' sciences.
