A signer of the Declaration of Independence and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, he was also a U. S. congressman, governor of Massachusetts, and VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES Gerry was born in Marblehead, Mass., on July 17, 1744. He graduated from Harvard College in 1762 and returned to Marblehead to enter his father's mercantile and shipping business. It is probable that he first espoused the patriot cause as a result of grievances over Britain's attempt to tax colonial commerce. Revolutionary Politics their Rights and Liberties. " Gerry subsequently was elected to the Massachusetts provincial congress, where he assumed the task of procuring supplies and military equipment to meet the needs of the patriot forces. Elected a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1776, he signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. In addition, Gerry served on several important committees, including the treasury board. Piqued by actions that he felt impinged on states' rights, he decided to withdraw from the CONGRESS in 1780. He resumed his seat in 1783 and would remain active in the Congress until 1785.

The Vice-Presidents The Presidents EA Contents JAMES DANFORTH QUAYLE Biography QUAYLE, James Danforth, (1947-), vice president of the United States under George Bush . He was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on Feb. 4, 1947. His maternal grandfather, Eugene Pulliam, Sr., was publisher of newspapers in Indianapolis and in Phoenix, Ariz. Quayle spent much of his boyhood in Arizona and then moved to Huntington, Ind., where his father became publisher of the local newspaper. Quayle graduated from DePauw University in 1969. In 1972 he married Marilyn Tucker. Entering state government, Quayle worked in the attorney general's office, and in the Department of Revenue, and assisted the governor. In 1974 he received a law degree from Indiana University. He and his wife practiced law in Huntington. Quayle was also associate publisher of his parents' newspaper. Quayle, a Republican, defeated an incumbent Democrat to win a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976. Reelected in 1978, he then defeated another veteran Democrat, Birch Bayh, in 1980 to win election to the U.S. Senate. Quayle was reelected in 1986. Senator Quayle supported the conservative programs of Ronald Reagan and focused on national defense and arms control issues. He cosponsored the Job Training Partnership Act of 1982, which allotted private and public resources to train the unemployed. In 1988 George Bush astonished almost everyone by choosing Quayle, who was little known nationally, as his running mate. Many charged that Quayle was not qualified to become president should he have to succeed Bush. Nonetheless, Bush and Quayle were elected by a solid margin. As vice president, Quayle concentrated on reforming the legal system and reducing government regulations. He headed the President's Council on Competitiveness, a cabinet-level group that sought to reduce the costs of government restrictions on businesses. In the 1992 campaign Quayle proved to be a conservative fighter ready to spar against the Democrats. Republicans George Bush and Dan Quayle lost their bid for reelection to Democrats Gov. Bill Clinton of Arkansas and Sen. Albert Gore of Tennessee.

From 1811 until his death he served in the federal government, successively as congressman, secretary of war, VICE PRESIDENT , senator, secretary of state, and again as senator. Always he was at the heart of the issues of his time, notably the nullification crisis and the conflict over slavery. Loyal to his nation, to his state of South Carolina, and, above all, to his principles, he sought to preserve the union while advancing Southern interests. Early Career Born in Abbeville district, S.C., on March 18, 1782, Calhoun grew up in an atmosphere of controversy and social change. The extension of cotton culture was bringing slavery into the up-country, where small farmers like his father were challenging the political dominance of the low-country planters. Calhoun was largely self-educated before he entered Yale as a junior in 1801. He graduated with honors in 1804; went on to law school, in Litchfield, Conn.; and was admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1807. Practicing in his native district, he quickly gained the reputation that took him to the state legislature. There, from 1809 to 1811, he helped establish an enduring balance of power between South Carolina's tidewater planters and piedmont farmers.

BRECKINRIDGE Biography John Cabell Breckinridge, (1821-1875), brek'in-rij, American public official, who was VICE PRESIDENT of the United States (1857-1861) before giving his allegiance to the Confederacy. Born near Lexington, Ky., on Jan. 15, 1821, he was educated at Centre College and Transylvania University and became a lawyer. After service in the Mexican War and in the Kentucky legislature, he was elected to CONGRESS in 1851. A Democrat from a previously Whig district, he was catapulated into leadership of his party in Kentucky. Five years later he leaped into national prominence as James BUCHANAN 's vice-presidential running mate. While still vice president, he was elected to the U.S. SENATE in 1859, effective on his retirement. Extremely cautious, Breckinridge avoided sectional controversy, but he held that slavery could not constitutionally be excluded from a territory. As a result, the Southern faction of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY nominated him for president in 1860. He never advocated secession, but, of the four candidates, he best represented the views of the deep South. He received 854,248 popular votes, 18.2% of the total, and carried 11 states with 72 ELECTORAL votes.

He was born in Sampson county, N.C., on April 7, 1786. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and served two terms in the state legislature. A member of the U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES from 1811 to 1816, he supported the War of 1812. He resigned to serve under William Pinkney as secretary of the U.S. legation in Naples and then in St. Petersburg. King then settled in Alabama, was a delegate to the convention that organized the new state government, and was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. SENATE in 1819. A supporter of President Andrew JACKSON , he became an expert on parliamentary procedure and served as president pro tempore of the Senate. After almost a quarter century in the Senate, King resigned in 1844 to become (until 1846) minister to France, where he was able to prevent France from joining Britain in opposing U.S. annexation of Texas. King reentered the Senate in 1848. Once again named president pro tempore, he was next in line for president for two and a half years after Millard
