The Life and Entertaining Adventures of Mr. Cleveland, Natural Son of Oliver Cromwell
Vikki?s Note: In 1996, I received copies of correspondence from Cleveland Family Chronicles Research Society (CFCRS) members John Arnett, Grace Green, and the late June Rayfield Welch concerning the possible connection between Oliver Cromwell and the Cleveland line, and the infamous book supposedly written by Cromwell's "natural son." Their genealogical "triumvirate" may be contributing as much to our family research efforts as Horace and Edmund's worthy genealogical volumes of 1899. Many thanks to them for their continuing support of and contributions to CFCRS.] [From a letter to Grace Green, dated 2 Jan 1996] Dear Grace, I've read with interest your comments in the CFCRS and have been intending to write you anyway to inquire more about what you knew regarding the Cleveland-Cromwell connection.... This past year I read Antonia Fraser's Cromwell and found the study of his life most interesting. Like most of the Cleveland descendants, I had hoped that the connection would eventually turn out to be correct...and it may yet be. On a trip to Washington a year or so ago, I copied some Coffey material and noted in the Coffey family writings a similar interest in trying to make a connection. A Rice Coffey who was the grandson of John Cleveland (m. Elizabeth Coffey) was quite certain that his grandfather was descended from English nobility, and several subsequent family members apparently claimed a Lady Axminster to have been an ancestor.

SYNOPSIS OF THE PREVOST NOVEL
By
John Arnett [Vikki's Note: Once again I thank John for his contributions in this Cromwell matter. If you are something of a romantic as I am, with a vivid imagination, it will be easy for you to get caught up in this narrative as if it is truly a historical account of one of our ancestors. So we must keep in mind that the Prevost book is a work of fiction, albeit historical fiction. Neverthless, as John pointed out to us previously, scrutiny of this book is important to Cleveland researchers simply because it had such a profound influence on our forebears and their philosophies.] The Life and Entertaining Adventures of Mr. Cromwell, Natural Son of Oliver Cromwell, Written by Himself. Giving a particular Account of his Unhappiness in Love, Marriage, Friendship, etc., and his great Sufferings in Europe and America. Intermixed with Reflections, describing the heart of Man in all its Variety of Passions and Disguises; also some curious Particulars of Oliver's History and Amours, never before made publick. London: Printed for T. Astley, at the Rose in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1735. [This book, written by Abbe (Antoine) Prevost (1697-1763), contains some 380,000 wordsabout the size of Henry Fielding's

Hammer's Slammers The General David Drake Introduction Characters Hardware Books Games
Characters
You can find most of the character names in Hammer's Slammers in the history books. I do not know whether Drake got them from his history books or not, but somehow they "fit" (Like a square peg in a round hole, but who cares? Just push harder.) I have added a short text that describes the historical person behind the name.
Alois Hammer
The leader Hammer is the leader of the Slammers (no, really!) Little is known about him except that he comes from a middle or upper middle class family, and worked his way up through the ranks of the Frisian defense forces before he founded the Slammers. To say more would be spoiling the short story "But Loyal To His Own" which can be found in the book "Hammer's Slammers." Quotes:
  • "Don't be so curst a fool to doubt my boys can execute orders without me to hold their hands." "Gassing the village was better?" the councillor asked with mild amusement. "It was quiet. No way you could have kept reporters from hearing about a nuke," Hammer explained.
Joachim Steuben
The sadistic, psychopathic homosexual we all know and love...sort of.

Enlightment
The Enlightenment describes the period in European history (17th-18th century) when the dominant philosophical idea was that human reason, through rational thought, could alone be used to solve problems and serve as the ethical system for living. Europeans knew very little about blacks living in the Africa's interior. So they relied upon old fairytales from travelers for their knowledge on Africa. Philosophers perpetuated negative stereotypes about blacks being inferior and associated blackness with evil.
While upholding the original equality of race among men , the evironmental theory very clearly stated the belief that all humans were originally white and that unnatural or extreme ecological conditions caused degeneration among the people of particular (non-white) areas.
Charles White (1728-1813) a geologist who wrote: "That the Penis of an African is larger than that of a European has I believe been shown in every anatomical school in London. Preparations of them are preserved in most anatomical museums, and I have one in mine." ["An Account of Regular Gradation in Man"]

WILLIAM GODWIN,
"OF HISTORY AND ROMANCE"
Note: Godwin wrote this piece, according to a note in the manuscript, "while the Enquirer [1797] was in the press, under the impression that the favour of the public might have demanded another volume." The study of history may well be ranked among those pursuits which are most worthy to be chosen by a rational being. The study of history divides itself into two principal branches; the study of mankind in a mass, of the progress the fluctuations, the interests and the vices of society; and the study of the individual. The history of a nation might be written in the first of these senses, entirely in terms of abstraction, and without descending so much as to name one of those individuals to which the nation is composed. It is curious, and it is important, to trace the progress of mankind from the savage to the civilised state; to observe the points of similitude between the savages of America and the savages of ancient Italy or Greece; to investigate the rise of property moveable to immoveable; and thus to ascertain the causes that operate universally upon masses of men under given circumstances, without being turned aside in their operation by the varying character of individuals. The fundamental article in this branch of historical investigation, is the progress and varieties of civilisation. But there are many subordinate channels into which it has formed itself. We may study the history of eloquence or the history of philosophy. We may apply ourselves to the consideration and the arts of life, and the arts of refinement and pleasure. There lie before us the history of wealth and the history of commerce. We may study the progress of revenue and the arts of taxation. We may follow the varieties of climates, and trace their effects on the human body and the human mind. Nay, we may descend still lower; we may have our attention engrossed by the succession of

Dear Vikki,
Since 1749 when Alexander Cleveland, Jr. named one of his sons, Oliver, there has circulated the family tradition that the "Southern" Clevelands had descended from an illegitimate son of Oliver Cromwell, and Col. Benjamin Cleveland possessed a book which was allegedly written by the son of this "natural " son of Cromwell which he proudly pointed to as proof of his kinship. In the pages of the CFCRS and among other writings of the Coffey clan, there has been lively discussion of the exact nature of this pedigree and its proof.
So what now? There is the possibility that Prevost based his historical fiction on some real life Cleveland and Lady Axminster and merely embellished the story. But most serious Cromwell researchers, such as Antonia Fraser, discount the possibility that Oliver Cromwell fathered any illegitimate children and attribute such stories to Royalist propagandists who were trying to discredit him. Although Prevost is certainly not a fan of Cromwell's, neither is he much more sympathetic to the intrigues of the court of Charles II and the Catholic Church. His motive in writing the book seems more just for the fun of it. But for us the descendants of Cleveland families who for years accepted the fact of the novel and even named their children for Oliver Cromwell, what can we hope to gain by this bit of revisionist history?
