From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Project Gutenberg (usually called " PG ") was launched by Michael Hart in in order to provide a library on the Internet of free electronic versions (sometimes called e-texts ) of physically existing books. The texts provided are mostly in the public domain , either because they were never under 15th-century German printer Johannes Gutenberg , who invented the first printing press with movable type. For the most part, Project Gutenberg concentrates on historically significant literature and reference works . The slogan of the project is "break down the bars of ignorance and illiteracy", chosen because the project hopes to continue the work of spreading public literacy and appreciation for our literary heritage that public libraries began in the early 20th century . All Gutenberg releases are available in plain ASCII text, and occasionally in other file formats as well. Because maximum availability is a goal, the project eschews prettier but bulkier and not-universally-compatible data formats such as

This project won the Communications Social Innovations Award for 1998. The following are summaries of a webpage entitled 'History and philosophy of Project Gutenberg' which can be found in full at http://promo.net/pg . Hundreds of electronic texts of complete books can be accessed at this website. Michael Hart, an eccentric with a real obsession, has been working for decades now on this electronic library. A Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois, helped him by naming him an 'adjunct professor of electronic text' and giving him a small annual salary and living expenses. Here are adapted extracts from the story of how Project Gutenberg developed. Monitored for the Institute by Roger Knights. Project Gutenberg began in 1971 when Michael Hart was given an operator's account with $100,000,000 of computer time in it by the operator's of the Xerox Sigma V mainframe at the Materials Research Lab at the University of Illinois. He proceeded to type in the Declaration of Independence. The premise on which Michael Hart based Project Gutenberg was: anything that can be entered into a computer can be reproduced indefinitely ... which Michael termed 'Replicator Technology'. The concept of Replicator Technology is simply that once a book or any other item (including pictures, sounds, and even 3-D items can be stored in a computer) then any number of copies can and will be available. 'Electronic Texts are made available in the easiest to use forms available - Plain Vanilla ASCII'

Originally conceived to assist Project Gutenberg (PG), Distributed Proofreaders (DP) is now the main source of PG e-books. In 2002 DP became an official Project Gutenberg site, as such Distributed Proofreaders is supported by Project Gutenberg. Site concept: This site provides a web-based method of easing the proofreading work associated with the digitization of Public Domain books into Project Gutenberg e-books. By breaking the work into individual pages many proofreaders can be working on the same book at the same time. This significantly speeds up the proofreading/e-book creation process. When a proofer elects to proofread a page of a particular book, the text and image file are displayed on a single web page. This allows the page text to be easily reviewed and compared to the image file, thus assisting the proofreading of the page text. The edited text is then submitted back to the site via the same web page that it was edited on. A second proofreader is then presented with the work of the first proofreader and the page image. Once they have verified the work of the first proofreader and corrected any additional errors the page text is again submitted back to the site. Once all pages for a particular book have been processed, a post-processor joins the pieces, properly formats them into a Project Gutenberg e-book and submits it to the Project Gutenberg archive.
