Cyberterror! Project Gutenberg URL swiped for Saddam By John Lettice Posted: 04/02/2003 at 10:56 GMT
A small hijacking will likely gladden the hearts of would-be cyberwarriors in the Pentagon. This morning, for reasons that are not entirely obvious, projectgutenberg.org seems to be pointing to the front page of the web site of the Mission of Iraq to the United Nations. Skulduggery by the Iraqi secret services, or fiendish cyberterrorists?
None of the above, we'd guess. It appears that projectgutenberg.org is supposed to be hosted by Maryland public information network Sailor, on whose front page you will currently see a duff link. Google cache attests to what it ought to look like, and you can actually get a front door to Project Gutenberg here.

The Problem

What's the Solution?
... fit in?
What is GutenMark?
GutenMark is a tool for automatically creating high-quality HTML or LaTeX markup from Project Gutenberg etexts. In combination with other freely-available conversion tools, GutenMark can convert Project Gutenberg etexts into publication-quality Postscript or PDF, for print-on-demand applications. The goal is for this conversion is completely automatic, without manual markup or editing.
What is Project Gutenberg?
Project Gutenberg or PG for short is a project for freely providing online books. Thousands of such "etexts" have been made available. Many are familiar classics, and many others are completely unfamiliar books you're unlikely to find anywhere else. I've provided a dozen or so of the etexts myself. GutenMark is not affiliated with Project Gutenberg in any way.)
The Problem
A problem with PG etexts dare I say it? is that they are not very pretty, in comparison to typical hand-held books. PG etexts have traditionally been provided in a format providing most of the

The premise on which Michael Hart based Project Gutenberg was: anything that can be entered into a computer can be reproduced indefinitely. . .what Michael termed "Replicator Technology" The concept of Replicator Technology is simple; once a book or any other item (including pictures, sounds, and even 3-D items can be stored in a computer), then any number of copies can and will be available. Everyone in the world, or even not in this world (given satellite transmission) can have a copy of a book that has been entered into a computer.

This text is distributed under the Project Gutenberg trademark. As such, I am required to offer a "copy of the etext in its original plain ASCII form" . That has been done. I am also required to provide an e-mail address for describing defects. That address is Nathan.Torkington@vuw.ac.nz As I generate no profits from distributing this etext, I do not need to pay Project Gutenberg 20% of those profits. If you choose to redistribute or make a profit from this, under the Project Gutenberg trademark, you may be required to pay that tithe.
The Small Print
Why is this "small print" statement here? You know: lawyers. They tell us that we could get sued if there is something wrong with your copy of this etext, even if what's wrong is not our fault, and even if you got it for free and from someone other than us. So, among other things, this "small print" statement disclaims most of the liability we could have to you if something is wrong with your copy. This "small print" statement also tells you how to distribute copies of this etext if you want to. As explained in greater detail below, if you distribute such copies you may be required to pay us if you distribute using our trademark, and if we get sued in connection with your distribution.

The Project Gutenberg Etext of A Discourse on Method
DISCOURSE ON THE METHOD OF RIGHTLY CONDUCTING THE REASON, AND SEEKING TRUTH IN THE SCIENCES
by Rene Descartes
PREFATORY NOTE BY THE AUTHOR
If this Discourse appear too long to be read at once, it may be divided into six Parts: and, in the first, will be found various considerations touching the Sciences; in the second, the principal rules of the Method which the Author has discovered, in the third, certain of the rules of Morals which he has deduced from this Method; in the fourth, the reasonings by which he establishes the existence of God and of the Human Soul, which are the foundations of his Metaphysic; in the fifth, the order of the Physical questions which he has investigated, and, in particular, the explication of the motion of the heart and of some other difficulties pertaining to Medicine, as also the difference between the soul of man and that of the brutes; and, in the last, what the Author believes to be required in order to greater advancement in the investigation of Nature than has yet been made, with the reasons that have induced him to write.
PART 1
For myself, I have never fancied my mind to be in any respect more perfect than those of the generality; on the contrary, I have often wished that I were equal to some others in promptitude of thought, or in clearness and distinctness of imagination, or in fullness and readiness of memory. And besides these, I know of no other qualities that contribute to the perfection of the mind; for as to the reason or sense, inasmuch as it is that alone which constitutes us men, and distinguishes us from the brutes, I am disposed to believe that it is to be found complete in each individual; and on this point to adopt the common opinion of philosophers, who say that the difference of greater and less holds only among the accidents, and not among the forms or natures of individuals of the same species.
