of Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin (1799-1837)
The Life of Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin
Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin was born in Moscow on May 26, 1799. He was decended from an ancient noble family on his fathers side of the family and was the great-great-grandson of an Abyssinian Negro, who served under Peter the Great on his Mother's side. In 1811 he was selected to be among the thirty students in the first class at the Lyceum in Tsarskoe Selo . He attended the Lyceum from 1811 to 1817 and received the best education available in Russia at the time. He soon not only became the unofficial laureate of the Lyceum, but found a wider audience and recognition. He was first published in the journal The Messenger of Europe in 1814. In 1815 his poem "Recollections in Tsarskoe Selo" met the approval of Derzhavin, a great eighteenth-century poet, at a public examination in the Lyceum. Though he was notable as an outstanding young poet, his political views soon got him into trouble with authorities. He was sent to southern Russia in 1820. Here he travelled the Caucasus, served in Bessarabia and Odessa, and continued his poetic works. This is the time when he also began his greatest work, Eugene Onegin a novel in verse form.

PUSHKIN ARTICLE SUBMITTED TO
THE OTTAWA CITIZEN'S WEEKLY
(page updated 6 July 2002)
Pushkin is often described not only as Russia's best-loved poet, but as the 'father' of the Russian literary language itself.
PLEASE NOTE: The following article on Pushkin was submitted to The Ottawa Citizen's Weekly, and published (in condensed form) in the Weekly of 6 June 1999, the actual date of the poet's bicentenary, together with translations of three of Pushkin's poems and of Lermontov's subsequent poetic eulogy to his mentor entitled Death of a poet The above portrait accompanied the article. Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin
Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Russia's best-loved poet John Woodsworth
Member, Slavic Research Group at the University of Ottawa At one o'clock this afternoon, Sunday, 6 June 1999, Ottawa's Russian-speaking community will be gathering at the Pushkin Cultural Centre near the Protection of the Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Church for a special celebration. They will be joining millions of other Russians in the former Soviet Union and around the world to mark the bicentenary of the birth of the man who has been called the father of modern Russian literature (Russia's answer to Shakespeare, one might say), yet who is not nearly as well known to the outside world as the great novelists and dramatists that subsequently followed in his footsteps, such as Dostoevsky, Tolstoy or Chekhov.

K A. S. Pushkinu (page updated 21 June 2002) Pushkin is often described not only as Russia's best-loved poet, but as the 'father' of the Russian literary language itself. PLEASE NOTE: The following translations were published in The Ottawa Citizen's Weekly (a weekly literary supplement to The Ottawa Citizen ) in its issue of 6 June 1999, the exact date of the bicentenary of Pushkin's birth, along with Lermontov's poetic eulogy to Aleksandr Sergeevich entitled Death of a poet (see my Lermontov translation page). Permission was then granted to the Russian Embassy in Canada to post the translations of the three poems by Pushkin himself on the Embassy website, where they remained for over two years, along with the translator's own poetic tribute to the great writer (reproduced at the end of the page below): To Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin.
