B ELLY B UTTON W INDOW W EBSITE Back to Random Russian Experiences Random Russia Experiences - Death Yesterday, in the middle of an overwhelmingly busy day, I received an email that stopped me in my tracks. My friend's mother had died. Actually, I'm not sure how Laura ranks in my life, or I in hers. After I spent a week living with her family in 1996, we wrote every so often, until I came here last year. Last summer, I went to her dacha and hung out with her family. In doing so, I think she counted me as a friend, Russian style. I thought of her as I would think of my American friends, and that is where the trouble began. She wrote me two very personal, very disturbing letters. One, while I was still back in the states, was about a personal trauma, that I didn't know how to respond to. I was not used to, nor did I expect her to share such intense moments of her life with me. My reaction, or lack of action, confused her. Like Vadim hints to in America , there is a much different level of friendship here.

Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin (17991837).

Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin As Russia’s national poet, Aleksandr Pushkin was responsible not only for creating a modern literary language in Russia but also for founding the tradition of the nineteenth-century Russian novel. During the early part of his career, he produced some of the finest lyric and narrative poetry ever written . Later in his career, he turned to writing prose fiction and history, before he was killed in a tragic duel over his wife’s honor. Pushkin’s writing has had a profound impact on Russian culture, as the numerous books and articles about his life and works, as well as the operas and ballets that have adapted them to the stage and screen, attest. His most famous work, the novel in verse Eugene Onegin [hyperlink to syllabus], illustrates the amazing richness and diversity of Pushkin’s talent and launched the tradition of the "superfluous man" in nineteenth-century Russian literature.
