Arthur Ransome Biographical Sketch
Arthur Ransome was born in Leeds , Yorkshire, England on January 18, 1884. His father Cyric was a history professor and a great lover of nature. As a child, Arthur spent much of his vacation in sailing, camping and exploring the countryside in England's Lake Country near Lake Coniston and Lake Windermere . You'll find some wonderful pictures at Arthur Ransome Picture File . This beautiful countryside influenced many other famous English writers, such as William Wordsworth. Arthur and his father shared a great love of fishing. He later used these wonderful settings from nature in his children's books. You can read more about this aspect of his life at Arthur Ransome . Like many upper class English children, Arthur was educated at Rugby where he actually lived in Lewis Carroll's study room (1). His poor vision, lack of athletic skills and poor academic performance left him with some unhappy memories of his school experiences (2).

'Arthur Ransome'
Arthur Ransome was born in Leeds on 18th Jan 1884. As a small boy he had holidays around Coniston , and attended preparatory school in Windermere, which gave Ransome an early taste for Lakeland. After completing his education, he worked in London, coming North whenever he could. He became a friend of W.G. Collingwood , writer artist and secretary to John Ruskin . Collingwood lived at Lanehead, beside Coniston Water, and it was here that Ransome learned to sail. Ransome's favourite childhood book was W.G. Collingwood's Thorstein of the Mere , which was set around Coniston. After an unsuccessful marriage, he went to Russia, where he met his future wife Evgenia Petrovna Shelepina, who had been Trotsky's secretary. In 1924, he gained a divorce, and was able to marry Evgenia and come back to The Lake District, living first in the Winster Valley. Apart from two periods when he went South, he lived in Cumbria for the rest of his life, finding inspiration and settings for Swallows and Amazons . His last house was Hill Top at Haverthwaite. Arthur Ransome based his book 'Swallows and Amazons' on Coniston Water , and much fun may be had trying to discover the locations of the stories. There are special interest cruises on the

Grevel Lindop , senior lecturer in English at Manchester University, has written 'A Literary Guide to the Lake District', which is a full guide to the Lake District and its literary associations. It describes much of Cumbria that is related to the many literary persons who were inspired by it. The indexes cross referance all places associated with a person, and all persons associated with a place. (£9.99, Chatto and Windus, 1994). Gavin Smith has written 'The Lake Poets', which covers the lives and works of Hartley Coleridge, Samuel Coleridge, Thomas de Quincey, Robert Southey, Dorothy Wordsworth and William Wordsworth. He describes a selection of their work, and also lists places in the Lake District associated with them. The book was published by Dalesman in 1998, and includes many drawings by the local artist Christine Isherwood.

ARTHUR RANSOME COLLECTION
The Arthur Ransome Collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, and printed matter related to the life and writings of Arthur Ransome (1884-1967), the English journalist, critic, and renowned children's author best known for his series of books, "Swallows and Amazons." The collection comprises 2 boxes, 52 folders, and 0.5 linear feet of materials and is divided into five series. Nineteen letters, most handwritten or typed by Ransome, are retained in the collection, including correspondence from Ransome to several publishers, including Rupert-Hart Davis, H. W. Wilson, and John G. Wilson. Five letters from Ransome to Helena Hirst are also present. One of Ransome's letters written from Petersburg in 1914, detailing the situation in Russia as it entered World War I, highlights the correspondence file. The collection contains three valuable manuscripts written by Ransome: a typed and edited printer's proof of his book "'Racundra's' First Cruise," a typed, heavily edited, and signed manuscript of his story "The Soldier and Death," and two autograph notebooks titled "Thirteen Caucasian Folk Tales." Many essays by and about Ransome, mostly in the form of xerox copies, are also in this collection. A handful of articles by Ransome, including a series of dispatches Ransome wrote for "The China Weekly Review" and an essay about his reasons for writing the book "Swallows and Amazons," are preserved. Numerous essays about Ransome provide reviews of his works and significant biographical and bibliographical information.
