The Weltbinder Theatre of Blood Grandads Potting Shed Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) Arthur Ransome, the son of Cyril Ransome and Edith Boulton, was born in Leeds on 18th January, 1884. Educated at Rugby, Ransome was a reluctant student. He studied science at Yorkshire College (later to become Leeds University but left before taking his degree. Ransome moved to London where he scraped a living writing stories and articles for various literary journals. In the summer of 1913 he was commissioned to write an English guide on St. Petersburg. While in Russia he began work on Old Peter's Russian Tales. With the outbreak of the First World War, Ransome was recruited by the Daily News to report on the Eastern Front. Later he was also employed by J. L. Garvin, to write for the Observer. During this period he worked closely with Hamilton Fyfe, a journalist employed by the Daily Mail. After the Russian Revolution, Ransome remained in the country and became friendly with Vladimir Lenin and other Bolshevik leaders. His reports provided a sympathetic view of the revolution and when he arrived back in England in 1919 he was arrested by the police. After being interviewed by Sir Basil Thomson, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Ransome was released after he convinced the authorities that he was not a communist revolutionary. While in England he wrote Six Weeks in Russia (1919), an account of the revolution. Upset by what he had written, the Foreign Office refused him permission to leave the country.

27. Autobiography Of Arthur Ransome - Original Reviews

Reviews of The Autobiography of Arthur Ransome
Guardian, 9th September, 1976 (William Golding)
Father to the Man
Arthur Ransome always wanted to be a writer, and his parents inflicted on him the misery which is said to be the prerequisite for that profession. His father, who died while his son was still a young boy, nevertheless had time to treat him with the inadvertent cruelty which is so often the left hand of the theoretical educationist. His mother seems to have been a very conventional woman who was not much interested in him. No one knew he was so short-sighted as to be nearly blind. Even so, the boy Ransome had one great stroke of luck. He visited Lake Coniston and found by those shores a whole surrogate family of parents and cousins. From that time onward, whether he realised it or not, and whether he disguised it as the Baltic or the Saltings of the Ocean, Lake Coniston lay in him like a jewel, a talisman, a secret recipe for happiness. What a quaint and even farcical picture it is, this tough man stumping through life, fat, bespectacled, energetic, writing what came to hand but hoping one day to emulate Hans Andersen in that most difficult and aery genre! His best attempt, Old Peter's Russian Tales, had considerable success, but nothing to what came later. For Ransome was very much a solid scene man, devoid of conscious skill with allegory or unconscious luck with levels . What he was to achieve in the end was to be wholly down-to-earth.

1.Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) (1832-1898
Lewis Carroll, as he is better known, was born in Daresbury, near Warrington, Lancashire, and was educated at a private school in Richmond, Yorkshire, before going on to Rugby School in 1846 and Christ Church, Oxford, in 1851. And there he remained, as a Fellow of the College. His first book for children, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , appeared in 1865. It was devised to amuse the daughter of the dean of his college. It portrays Alice as a no-nonsense, confident little girl, possessed of considerable common sense, caught up in entirely fantastic - today we might say surreal - adventures. Its sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass , was published in 1871. Find out more about Lewis Carroll Find out more about Alice in Wonderland
2.Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924)
was born in Manchester, England, in 1849 but moved with her widowed mother to Tennessee, USA, in 1865. She wrote for adults as well as children. Her best known children's books are Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886) and The Secret Garden The eponymous hero of Little Lord Fauntleroy is portrayed as open, loyal, trusting and courageous. He has a keen sense of fair play and is alert to the needs of the disadvantaged. In the book he unwittingly converts his self-centred and miserly grandfather - an Earl - into a compassionate landlord.

'Twinkle twinkle, little star' must be one of the earliest rhymes we ever learn as children. It surprises people to discover it was actually composed, rather than handed down in folklore, and the author Jane Taylor (1783-1824) grew up in Lavenham Her father, Isaac Taylor was a successful engraver who moved from London to Shilling Street, Lavenham. The house, Shilling Old Grange, now marked with a blue plaque, was large enough for his growing family. Briefly the family moved next door into Arundel House, but when the war with France broke out in 1793, and the European market was closed to English engravers and printers, Isaac Taylor faced ruin and was forced to move to a tiny house in Colchester. He trained all six of his children as engravers, even the girls. By 1803, Jane and her sister Ann were sitting writing verses for The Minor's Pocket Book , and when the publishers wrote ad offered payment in books or cash they responded enthusiastically, 'Books good but cash better.' 'Twinkle, twinkle' was included in Rhymes for the Nursery (1806) and one of Jane's hymns, 'Lord I would own Thy Tender Care' from
