Reade, Charles (1814-1884) Englischer Schriftsteller. Den Durchbruch schaffte Reade mit seinen gut recherchierten sozialkritischen Romanen wie "Peg Woffington" "It is Never Too Late to Mend" (3 Bde., 1856) und "Hard Cash" (3 Bde., 1863, "Hart Geld" ). This is achieved by juxtaposing two literary genres from different traditions (Western detective fiction and Chinese court-case fiction) and exploring the issues that arise from reading them together. We will seek to link the role of technical features in the texts with the production of meaning for the individual reader and for society. Issues will include the role of watchdog figures and how they, in turn, may need to be controlled; the possibility that crime may arise from a failure of society to redress wrongs; and the relationship between class and the justice system; all of which issues ultimately revolve around basic problems of justice.
