Reed, John Reed, John, , American journalist and radical leader, b. Portland, Oregon. After graduating from Harvard in 1910, he wrote articles for various publications and from 1913 was attached to the radical magazine The Masses. His coverage of the Paterson, N.J., silk workers strike of 1913 profoundly affected him, and thereafter he became a proponent of revolutionary politics. The articles that he wrote from Mexico about Pancho Villa established his reputation as a journalist and a radical. He served as a reporter in Europe in World War I and was in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) when the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917; his book, Ten Days That Shook the World (1919), is considered the best eyewitness account of the revolution. Expelled from the U.S. Socialist convention in 1919, he helped to organize the Communist Labor party, a left-wing splinter group of the Socialist party. He was indicted for sedition in New York City in 1918 and in Philadelphia in 1919, but both cases were dropped. Reed returned to the USSR, worked in the Soviet bureau of propaganda, and was appointed Soviet consul to New York. Upon protest from the U.S. government, Reed was withdrawn from the consulship. He died in Moscow of typhus and was buried at the Kremlin. A selection of his writings was edited by John Stuart (1955). See biographies by G. Hicks (1936), R. O'Connor and D. L. Walker (1967), and B. Gelb (1973).

Lone Pine cemetery is located just 6 miles north west of Clarksville, Arkansas on hwy. 103 and then 2 1/2 miles east on Lone Pine road. Lone Pine road is well known by the locals, however, for those of you who are far off, it is county hwy. 76.
The gravestones are all in good shape, with only some of the older ones needing a bit of cleaning. Several of the graves have flowers. The cemetery looks to be well taken care of, I only saw one or two headstones that have fallen over, although some are a little crooked as the tree roots have grown and pushed the headstones off a bit. On the south side there are several places where small rock walls of about 8 to 12 inches high have been built to level out the graves. The front, or south side, consists mainly of graves from the 1800's with a few from the 1900's. The back, or north side, has mainly graves from the 1900's with a few from the 1800's sprinkled in here and there. To the best of our knowledge these stones were read correctly: Donna and Marci Boden July 2000

Ten Days That Shook The World The title of a book by American journalist John Reed (1887-1920), published in 1919 and with a foreward by Lenin. This was one of the few eyewitness accounts of the Russian Revolution in English (another was by Arthur Ransome, better known for his Swallows and Amazons books), written from a pro-Bolshevik point of view. Archive film clips, Eisenstein reconstructions and the voiceover of Orson Welles later combined in an excellent documentary film with the same title. The ten days that shook the world ran from 16-26 October, 1917 (Old Style). Go back to the top. There's a Valley in Spain Called Jarama...

Assignments RUS 493 "African-American Literary Ties to Russian Intellectual Thought" URL: syllabus.htm "Black Americans and the Early Communist Party" In the 1920s and 30s blacks, particularly from the Americas, viewed Russia (the Soviet Union) as a kind of "new society." The bright ideals of Soviet communism attracted blacks seeking a society where they would not be persecuted because of their color. The Soviet Union became a gathering place for human rights activists and for those who sought to escape the Great Depression. By the early 1930s perhaps as many as several hundred blacks had visited the Soviet Union. We will read some of the autobiographical accounts of these encounters and this migration. Another source of information on this will come from American and Soviet newspaper and journal articles. In the 1920s several blacks were among the first foreigners invited to attend special schools established to train Communist party leaders for various parts of the world. In 1921 the comintern founded the Communist University for the Toilers of the East (sometimes called the Far East University), intended mainly for students from the Soviet East and from colonial countries. Communist students represented only a small minority of the blacks who traveled to the Soviet Union. Most were neither pro- nor anti-communist; their only definite objective was to find a society where a person’s worth was not defined by skin color.

    Voices of Protest
Throughout history people have protested against injustice. Some have sought to attain or defend hard-won democratic rights; others have sought to liberate their nation from foreign rule, or to support those who have been unjustly inprisoned. Others have made their protest, and campaigned for progressive social change until their objectives have been realised. Many have spent years in prison or paid the supreme sacrifice for their cause.
