Portfolio Reilly Industries Introduces the Reilly Shrink Sleeve Product Line INDIANAPOLIS
– Reilly Pipeline Coatings Group (PCG) today announced the introduction of a new product line within its coatings portfolio, Reilly Shrink Sleeves. The new shrink sleeves are available immediately and consist of a cross linked polyolefin backing, a closure for mechanical protection and an anticorrosive adhesive that will prevent corrosion at pipeline joints. Reilly PCG is working in concert with Fameim S.A., to produce the Reilly Shrink Sleeves. The partnership will allow Reilly PCG to provide consumers with an end-to-end, single vendor solution for anti-corrosive pipeline coatings products, as well as a high-quality joint coating for oil, gas, and water pipelines. "The introduction of Reilly Shrink Sleeves broadens the marketplace and allows us to provide a high-quality product to enhance our current systems," said Brett Wilhelm, global business director, Reilly Pipeline Coatings Group. "A combination of Reilly Coal Tar Enamel (CTE) and our new Sleeves will result in a nearly impenetrable pipeline." The new Reilly Shrink Sleeves (Reilly BWS and Reilly BWH), which provide excellent anticorrosive protection for pipelines that operate up to 65°C (150°F), create a barrier that insulates the pipeline against potential corrosive materials. With a high adherence level, they are also resistant to cathodic disbondment. Working in conjunction with Reilly CTE coating products, PCG Sleeves can help provide total pipeline corrosion protection.

The "Oh Really?" Factor
Bill O'Reilly spins facts and statistics
By Peter Hart If it’s spin to back up your arguments with bogus facts and statistics, and to dismiss numbers that don’t fit in with your preconceptions, then Bill O’Reilly’s Fox News Channel show isn’t, as he repeatedly claims, a "no-spin zone" it’s Spin City. During an interview with National Organization for Women president Kim Gandy ( O’Reilly Factor , 2/5/02), O’Reilly claimed that "58 percent of single-mom homes are on welfare." When Gandy questioned that figure, O’Reilly held firm: "You can’t say no, Miss Gandy. That’s the stat. You can’t just dismiss it. . . . It’s 58 percent. That’s what it is from the federal government." But by the next broadcast (2/6/02), O’Reilly was revising his accounting: "At this point, we have this from Washington, and it’s bad. 52 percent of families receiving public assistance are headed by a single mother, 52 percent." Not only is that a different number, it’s the reverse of the statistic he offered the previous night not the percentage of households headed by single mothers that receive welfare, but the percentage of families receiving public assistance headed by single mothers. That’s a distinction that O’Reilly did not attempt to clarify; he seemed unapologetic about emphatically putting forward an inaccurate statistic the night before. The following night (2/7/02), O’Reilly came up with more solid figures, but they bore no resemblance to his original numbers: About 14 percent of single mothers receive federal welfare benefits, he now said less than one-fourth of his earlier claim. (He suggested that food stamps ought to be considered a kind of welfare, but that only gets him to 33 percent still 25 percentage points short.) O’Reilly explained that "it’s really hard to get a stat to say how many single moms percentage-wise get government assistance," though he’d found it easy enough to pull one out of the air just three nights earlier.

Print Email weblog link TrackBack This week, Sybase announced the beta availability of Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) for Mac OS X. My experience with Sybase on Mac OS X goes back to proto-Mac OS X, when I picked up a two floppy set of Sybase version 4.something for my NeXTStation. That was kind of cool, running a solid data server that fit on two floppies.
    A Watershed Event
So, what's the significance of the Sybase announcement? Some are saying that this is the first major enterprise-class database to come to Mac OS X, and with all due respect, this is debatable. Apple has been shipping the enterprise-class MySQL with their enterprise-class Mac OS X Server, and other enterprise-class databases, such as PostgreSQL and OpenBase, are available for Mac OS X. It's all in what you define as enterprise-class. (And we could argue about that for weeks!) But still, the release of Sybase ASE is a watershed event, because it's a certain

In the article he explains: "When I started the language project, I was joking with a friend that the project must be code-named after a gemstone's name (àla Perl). So my friend came up with "ruby". It's a short name for a beautiful and highly valued stone. So I picked up that name, and it eventually became the official name of the language. An Introduction to Differential GPS
    by Chris Halsall
When GPS first became available to consumers, it was heralded as the beginning of a new age of navigation. And it was. For the first time anyone could fine out where they where, anywhere on the planet give or take about 80 meters. The military's was better and far more accurate while the consumer version was intentionally degraded by way of a GPS system mode, selective availability (SA). There were (probably) good reasons for this from the military perspective, but for mariners in bad weather, plus or minus 80 meters can mean the difference between safely pulling into the harbor or taking off the keel. To deal with this inaccuracy, several groups developed and deployed Differential GPS (DGPS). DGPS works by having GPS receivers at stationary, known locations, near to where accurate position determination is desired. These stations broadcast the range errors they're seeing from each and every GPS satellite. Normally the transmission is by way of radio beacons, but geostationary satellites and the Internet are also commonly used. Plot of test data used during development of PgDGPS for sanity checking.
