T he motto around here is, We are not the first, I’m sure, to note that if cars required the same kind of skill and concern to run them as do computers, we’d all still be riding horses. The computer, today, still demands a measure of technical skill and concern that precludes turning the bloody things on and watching them run like our watches do. Of course, we forget the early days of the automobile, when the most popular song was, " Get out and get under your automobile ." The early days of the automobile, it seems required the same kind of skill and attention by non-mechanics as does the computer today. And in fact, one of my best friends – literally – is a guy I’ve never met in person, but he’s someone I talk to more than anybody I know. He’s a techie at Microsoft, without whom I couldn’t say three intelligent things on this web site. Brett is more valuable to me – and the others he serves – than my doctor or my lawyer. Annoyances series come darn close. And even Brett confesses that he likes them.

An Interview with the Creator of Ruby
by Bruce Stewart Ruby has been described as an absolutely pure object-oriented scripting language and a genuine attempt to combine the best of everything in the scripting world. Ruby is written in C, and it was designed with Perl and Python capabilities in mind. While its roots are in Japan, Ruby is slowly but surely gaining ground in the U.S. Yukihiro Matsumoto (or "Matz" as he's known online) is the creator of Ruby and the author of O'Reilly's recently released book on the language, Ruby in a Nutshell Matz is a professional programmer who has worked for the Japanese open source company, netlab.jp. Matz is also known as one of the high-profile open source evangelists in Japan. He's released several open source products, including cmail, an emacs-based, mail-user agent, written entirely in emacs lisp. Ruby is his first piece of software that has become known outside of Japan. We recently spoke to Matz about Ruby's history, the influence Perl and Python had on Ruby, and why the world needs another scripting language.

He’s a bum
by Joe Shapiro
THERE ARE PEOPLE who call in to sports radio shows to tell a tremendously overweight, raspy-voiced cigar smoker that Manny Ramirez, he’s a bum, if, for instance, you’re in Cleveland driving through the slush with baseball season months past and months to come. They love to throw bum (and all its connotations) around because—like the good ol’ Americans that they are—they hate the job they’re driving to, are stuck in the recent past, and are utterly addicted to the mindless banter of this bizarre space on the AM dial. But I’m joining the crackle and buzz arguments in writing today: Rick Reilly (the author of “Life of Reilly” which appears weekly on Sports Illustrated ’s last page), he’s a bum. So, people say he’s good, good like Tiger Woods is “good” at golf. (The debate’s terms circumscribe metaphoric possibility like a well-run press, but I’m not going to call time-out just yet.) His stats are impressive; but I only name one for now—National Sportswriter of the Year, seven times—because I’m not here to brag for him, not for this bum. Starting from the top: what’s with this guy’s usual picture, the one that rides atop the column each week? Is Rick trying to look like a headshot model for a SuperCuts window display? So slick, so greasy—the picture might slide off the page if you hold the magazine at the wrong angle. Low blow, I’ll admit it. At least the picture this week isn’t so terrible; Reilly sports a buzz cut and sits humbly in his office. To the gratitude of all his readers, this week his head doesn’t take up the entire photo.

Why the Left is So Afraid of Bill O'Reilly
by Rachel Alexander
November 2002 O'Reilly's level of popularity on mainstream television frightens the Left, because until now, television viewers had generally been considered their territory. The Right had been relegated to talk radio, small newspapers, and magazines. Then the Internet emerged as a popular forum for news and opinion and along came Fox news. Fox not only rejected the dominant liberal approach of the other networks but told viewers that it was "fair and balanced" news - essentially allowing it to capture vast middle America in addition to the Right wing. The rise of Fox News paved the way for O'Reilly: as people discovered that the major networks - whom they had trusted over the years to be fair arbiters of the news - were all inherently biased, they realized they may as well listen to someone who did not try to mince words or present only one side of the story. O'Reilly's willingness to invite guests on his show whose opinions are diametrically opposed to his, while maintaining a reporter's news presence, is part of the key to his success. Unlike primetime evening news, he fairly includes radical opinions from both the Left and the Right, as well as minority views along the political spectrum. Unlike other political debate shows, he keeps the forum tightly wrapped so the show does not disintegrate into chaos making it difficult to follow or clearly hear any one person speaking. And like the primetime news shows, he covers most of the current and important political issues on each show.

An Analysis of Genetic Programming
Thesis Chapters Precis'
Chapter 2 Precis: [Back to thesis index] Section 2.1 motivates and describes the five problems that we use to perform comparison of GP with other program discovery algorithms. In Section 2.2, an extensive description of Genetic Programming (GP) complementing its introduction in Chapter 1 is presented. Pseudocode of the first and simplest version of GP is presented and various aspects of the algorithm are explained. In Section 2.3 we explain how program behaviour such as iteration, recursion and conditionality can be implemented via primitives. In Section 2.4, we discuss the salient features of crossover operators. We include a brief description of crossover operators we have experimented with and summarize their comparison. We also describe research on ``context-preserving'' crossover and ``greedy recombination''. In Section 2.5 we describe new genetic operators, selection algorithms and representational extensions that are widely used by the GP research community.
Chapter 3 Precis: [Back to thesis index] Section 3.1 is devoted to judging how much of GP's success arises from skillful designer choice of the primitives, test suite and fitness function and to determining whether hierarchical process is present in GP.

How Fitness Structure Affects Subsolution Acquisition
Una-May O'Reilly, David E. Goldberg
Abstract: We define fitness structure in genetic programming to be the mapping between the subprograms of a program and their respective fitness values. This paper shows how various fitness structures of a problem with independent subsolutions relate to the acquisition of subsolutions. The rate of subsolution acquisition is found to be directly correlated with fitness structure whether that structure is uniform, linear or exponential. An understanding of fitness structure provides partial insight into the complicated relationship between fitness function and the outcome of genetic programming's search.

Inside the Driver
by Dave Phillips
The Linux kernel sees device drivers as either block or character drivers. A block device hosts a filesystem; thus, the drivers for your IDE disks and your tape drives are all block devices. Character devices are accessed like files, and the character device driver implements the system's I/O calls (open/close, read/write) on the requested device. Drivers are compiled into the kernel or as modules to be dynamically loaded into the kernel space. Once a module occupies kernel space its services are available exactly as any other available system function. Applications can then access those services by reading and writing to the special files found in the /dev directory (e.g. /dev/dsp or /dev/audio Device drivers may be very simple or very complex. Writing a Linux soundcard device driver is a relatively complex task, hence the need for complete technical documentation and specifications from the card manufacturer. Happily some manufacturers have taken an open attitude about supplying that information to driver developers, and you can view the source code for the resulting kernel sound modules in /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound . Recommended modules for study include sound_core.c
