Artist - Reynolds Reynolds, Sir Joshua (1723-1792) Self-portrait Painter and theorist, the first President of the Royal Academy in London, and the artist responsible, more than any other, for raising the status and prestige of artists in Britain. Born in Plympton near Plymouth, Reynolds trained in London before travelling to Italy where he was inspired by the art of Ancient Rome and the Italian Renaissance. Despite his ambitions for his art, the realities of the British art market, meant he worked primarily as a portrait painter. Mrs Musters as Hebe Reynolds: did you know? Reynolds was always experimenting with painting materials, mixing his paints with anything from varnish and bitumen to eggs and wax, often with disastrous consequences for his paintings. Reynolds’s great rival as a portrait painter, Thomas Gainsborough, complained of his powers of invention with the words: ‘Damn him, how various he is.’ Exhibition curated by the National Gallery, London

Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) Source: http://www.museum-london.org.uk/MOLsite/exhibits/creative/artistloc/1800/1800_jreynolds_i.html introduction As a portrait painter, Reynolds had the pleasure of seeing and conversing with all the famous people of his time. From 1777 on, he painted a number of portraits for the Thrales’s library at Streatham Park. These portraits not only display Henry, Hester, and their eldest daughter Queeney but also their guests. Reynolds was one of these quests. He belonged to the so-called Steatham circle, or “Streathamites” as Fanny Burney called them. Other members of this circle were Giuseppe Baretti, Edmund Burke, Charles Burney, David Garrick, Oliver Goldsmith and Samuel Johnson. The Letters of Sir Joshua Reynolds (2000) shows Reynolds’ letters written to his fellow Streathamites. Although the edition does not contain any letters written to Oliver Goldsmith and Giuseppe Baretti, both men played an important role in Reynolds’ life. It was Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) who introduced Reynolds to James Boswell. The two men became close friends. Reynolds encouraged Boswell to finish his Life of Johnson and it was to him that Boswell dedicated his work. Oliver Goldsmith’s

Pavla vedle Christophera Wrena.

Reynolds was born in Plympton, Devonshire, on July 16, 1723, the son of a cleric. He learned portraiture from a painter in London and in 1749 sailed to the Mediterranean with Commodore Augustus Keppel. After three years traveling in Italy he returned to London, where he soon attracted notice by his portraits of prominent persons. He came to be the first English painter to achieve social recognition for his artistic achievements. In 1764 Reynolds founded the Literary Club, which included essayist and critic Samuel Johnson, actor David Garrick, statesman Edmund Burke, writer Oliver Goldsmith, writer James Boswell, and dramatist Richard Brinsley Sheridan. When the Royal Academy of Arts was instituted in 1768, Reynolds was elected president and was knighted. In 1769 he delivered the first of his annual Discourses (pub. 1778) to the students of the academy in which he set forth the idealistic, moralizing principles of academic art. In 1784 he succeeded Allan Ramsay as painter to the king; in the same year he exhibited his portrait of the English actor Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse (1784, Huntington Art Gallery, San Marino, California), probably his greatest portrait. Other well-known paintings are Nelly O'Brien (1760-62, Wallace Collection, London), Lady Sarah Bunbury (1765, Art Institute of Chicago), Heads of Angels (1787, Tate Gallery, London), and Age of Innocence (1788, Tate Gallery).

From the Engraving by Dickenson, after Reynolds ( Memoirs , facing page 82) Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), a popular, critically acclaimed portrait painter, had a strong interest in literature and literary subjects. He painted Mary Robinson at least twice. In Ainsi va le monde , Robinson lavishly praises Reynolds's "magic skill": "Thy hand, by Nature guided, marks the line/That stamps perfection on the form divine." Robinson claims that Reynolds's abilities surpass those of Raphael and Titian. Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (1723-1792)
Reynolds, the great portrait painter and President of the Royal Academy , was born near Plymouth, Devon. Intended by his parents for the medical profession, he showed an over-riding proclivity for art, and in 1740 he went to London to pursue his art studies, becoming a pupil of Hudson, a leading portraitist. Back in Devon in 1743, Reynolds set up as a portrait painter himself, but returned to London in 1743. From 1749 to 1752 he lived in Italy, where he studied the works of Michelangelo and Raphael. After this period, his reputation growing, he established himself in London, and was one of the first members of the Incorporated Society of Artists. When the Royal Academy was set up in 1768, Reynolds was appointed its first President. He gave a famous series of fifteen Discourses for Academy students, and exhibited some 245 works in the Academy Exhibitions. He was appointed painter to the king in 1784, and spent his later years living in Leicester Square where there is a small bust to commemorate him.

Sir Joshua Reynolds R.A by Gilbert Stuart Sir Joshua Reynolds' reputation today rests principally on his portraits, his theoretical writings on art and his role as President of the Royal Academy. Yet in his own day Reynolds' subject pictures were among the most widely discussed British paintings of the century. Sir Josh ua Reynolds was born in the village of Plympton, near Plymouth, UK, on 16 th July 1723, the sixth son of a cleric who was headmaster at Plympton Grammar School, (shown left), where Reynolds was later educated. He was probably named after his uncle, though his father maintained that it would be an advantage in later life to have an uncommon Christian name. Intended by his parents for the medical profession, he showed an over-riding proclivity for art, his first drawing being of the colonnade of the grammar school. In 1740 he went to London to pursue his art studies, becoming a pupil of Hudson, a leading portraitist. He studied with Hudson until 1743 when his father could no longer afford even the reduced fees charged by Hudson and returned home. Reynolds set up as a portrait painter at what was then known as Plymouth Dock and became quite popular locally. However, his popularity waned and he returned to London "to study great pictures and perfect himself in his art". In 1746 Reynolds's father died and the painter set up home for himself and two sisters in Plymouth Dock and then came into contact with the leading painter William Gandy, whose father had studied under Vandyke and whose genius was only spoiled by his lack of perseverance. Gandy taught Reynolds to paint with richness and texture "as if the colours had been composed of cream cheese"

They both captured the rich and famous ... only Reynolds used a brush. Sir Joshua Reynolds Reynolds literally put a memorable face on English painting so long in the shadow of the European masters. He painted more than 2,000 carefully observed portraits of the aristocracy, prominent leaders and artists of the era. They included the writer and his friend Samuel Johnson, statesman Edmund Burke, Josiah Wedgwood, developer of the cream pottery called "Queen's Ware," and the actress Sarah Siddons in Portrait of Mrs. Siddons as the Tragic Muse , arguably his most famous painting, housed at the Huntington Gallery in San Marino, Calif. The Prince Regent's love of fine objects included paintings. He hung his collection of paintings on the walls of the opulent Carlton House . The "Shipbuilder and his Wife", purchased at auction in 1811 for 5,000 guineas, can be seen hanging on the wall of the Blue Velvet Room in the 1818 watercolor by Charles Wild, engraved by Daniel Havell for the hand colored acquatint plate book The History of the Royal Residences by William Henry Pyne . By 1816, the suite of state rooms at Carlton House was adorned with 136 paintings. 67 more paintings were in the Prince's bedroom suite. His other 250 paintings were in storage. In 1814, the Prince Regent acquired 86 Dutch and Flemish paintings from the heir of the banker, Sir Francis Baring . This brought the total Dutch and Flemish Maters works in his collection to over 200. The Prince Regent then sold 77 of his least favorite paintings, mostly still lifes, anonymously at Christie's on June 29, 1814. The Prince also commissioned and collected works by British portrait painters Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, William Beechery (1753-1839), John Hoppner , and Sir Thomas Lawrence. Lawrence's energetic style and vivid colors particularly suited George the IV's style. The Scottish artist David Wilkie's work of 1818, "Penny Wedding," reminded the Prince Regent of his Dutch paintings. He became Wilkie's patron. George IV's passion for animals led him to patronize sporting artists Sawrey Gilpin

Sir Joshua Reynolds
No figure in England exerted greater influence on the art of his day than Sir Joshua Reynolds. Reynolds was brought up in an educated family, unusual for the artists of his day, and eventually became friends with some of the most notable figures of the second half of the century, including Dr. Johnson, Goldsmith, Burke, and Garrick. His great learning and personal influence through the Academy probably had an impact disproportionate to the actual quality of his art. Reynolds was apprenticed to Hudson in 1740 in London, but in 1743 he left his master and returned to his native Devonshire. From 1743 to 1749 he worked on his own in Devonshire and London, and then left for Italy. Before his trip to classical ground, the main influences on Reynolds had been Hogarth and Ramsay, but his two year visit to Rome introduced him to the styles of Raphael and Michelangelo, from whom he learned something of the intellectual basis of Italian art. On his way home he spent two weeks in Venice, and this profoundly influenced his portrait style. In 1753 Reynolds set up in London, met Johnson, and quickly established his name. His only real rivals were Ramsay and Cotes (and later Gainsborough). When the Royal Academy was founded in 1768, the only logical choice for President was Reynolds. He was knighted the following year and given an Honorary Doctorate at Oxford (an honor he shared only with Kneller among artists). Following 1768 Reynolds worked assiduously to use the Academy as an instrument to establish a British School of history painters that rivaled those of Italy. His fifteen Discourses composed and delivered at the Academy from 1769-90 admirably articulate the dominant aesthetic theory of his day.
