As we used to talk together of the future we had planned,
When I should be a poet, and with nothing else to do
But write the tender verses that she set the music to . . . Then we should live together in a cozy little cot
Hid in a nest of roses, with a fairy garden spot,
Where the vines were ever fruited, and the weather ever fine,
And the birds were ever singing for that old sweetheart of mine. . . .....from An Old Sweetheart of Mine by James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) More love poems/quotes for you? Now available-

Eitel ([1887]-1960) was born in Indianapolis. His father was Henry Eitel and his mother was Elva Riley, sister of Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley. Eitel's uncle celebrated him in one poem as "The Knightly Rider of the Knee." Eitel graduated from Shortridge High School in 1903, and earned a degree in mechanical engineering at Cornell University, where he was editor-in-chief of the Cornell Daily Sun. Eitel worked for several years at the Union Trust Company in Indianapolis, but took some time off at the time of Riley's death in 1916 to act as his uncle's literary executor. He worked with Laurence Chambers at the Bobbs-Merrill Company to produce the standard biographical edition of Riley's works. During World War I, Eitel was a lieutenant in the naval air force. He later built one of the first houses in the suburb of Golden Hill. Sources: Indiana Biographical Series, Vol. 56 pages 25 and 28

James Whitcomb Riley
James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) was born in Greenfield Indiana. He was a regular contributor of poetry to the Indianapolis Daily Journal. In his writing, Riley recorded the speech of a community of rural speakers of the Hoosier dialect.
The Tree-Toad
"Scur'ous-like," said the tree-toad,
"I've twittered fer rain all day;
And I got up soon,
And hollered tel noon
But the sun, hit blazed away,
Tel I jest clumb down in a crawfish-hole,
Weary at hart, and sick at soul! "Dozed away fer an hour,
And I tackled the thing ag'in:
And I sung, and sung,
Tel I knowed my lung,
Was jest about give in; And then , thinks I, ef hit don't rain now They's nothin' in singin', anyhow! "Once't in a while some farmer, Would come a-drivin' past; And he'd hear my cry, And stop and sigh Tel I jest laid back, at last, And I hollered rain tel I thought my th'oat Would bust wide open at ever' note! "But I fetched her!O I fetched her! 'Cause a little while ago, As I kindo' set, With one eye shet, And a-singin' soft and low

Jimmy loved the poetry of James Whitcomb Riley, the Hoosier poet. Riley also came from Indiana and inspired Jimmy throughout his life. Here are just a few selections and extracts from Riley's poems:
    FAME
Once, in a dream, I saw a man,
With haggard face and tangled hair,
And eyes that nursed as wild a care
    As gaunt Starvation ever can;
And in his hand he held a wand
Whose magic touch gave life and thought
Unto a form his fancy wrought
And robed with coloring so grand, It seemed the reflex of some child Of Heaven, fair and undefiled- A face of purity and love- To woo him into worlds above: And as I gazed with dazzled eyes, A gleaming smile lit up his lips As his bright soul from its eclipse Went flashing into Paradise. Then tardy Fame came through the door And found a picture-nothing more. LAUGHTER Within the coziest corner of my dreams He sits, high-throned above all gods that be Portrayed in marble-cold mythology, Since from his joyous eyes a twinkle gleams So warm with life and light it ever seems Spraying in mists of sunshine over me

. The sole monument to Indiana's centennial still standing is our State Parks. They were created in 1916, largely through the efforts of one man: Richard Lieber. This is both his story and the story origin of our State Parks and Department of Natural Resources. It is also a snapshot of another time. In this engaging, participatory story, listeners are guided back into the moment when the Parks began. A live auction is re-created (using students/teachers as bidders), at which our first State Park was bid upon, lost, nearly ruined, and regained. Entwined with this presentation is a reverence for the natural world around us, a portrait of German immigrants in Indianapolis, and a subtle mystery puzzle that, in due course, reveals an intriguing symbol of hope.

Heaven portions it thusthe old mystery dim,- It is midnight to us-itis morning to him by James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) Paddle

POETRY AND CROWN HILL It is generally known that famous Hoosier Poet James Whitcomb Riley is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, indeed, buried at the very top of Crown Hill. But several other poets, well-known in their time but now mostly forgotten, are also buried here. These include Sarah Bolton, Indiana's first and most famous female poet; Dan Paine, known as one of "the cloak poets" for his habit of wandering the streets in his huge army overcoat; and a contemporary Black poet, Etheridge Knight. Here is a sample of their poetry. At Crown Hill
Leave him here in the fresh
    greening grasses and trees
And the symbols of love, and the solace of these-
The saintly white lilies and blossoms he keeps
    In endless caress as
    he breathlessly sleeps.
The tears of our eyes wrong the scene of his rest,
For the sky's at its clearest-the sun's at its best-
The earth at its greenest- its wild bud and bloom
At its sweetest-and sweetest its honey'd perfume. Home! Home!-Leave him here in his lordly estate, And with never a tear as we turn from the gate!

THE PEOPLE OF CROWN HILL The most important people buried in any cemetery are the ones you knew and loved. With over 185,000 burials, Crown Hill contains a lot of love and many, many stories. But Crown Hill also contains hundreds of men and women who became well known in politics, literature, the arts, sports, or in some other way. The following is a sample of those buried here. *Lyman S.
