  • Selected Poetry of James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) Astonishingly, James Whitcomb Riley was one of the most popular poets of his day. The preface to his Poems (1913) suggests that 'his poems deserve to be better known...' which is a sentiment that many would disagree with, especially in the light of 'A Nonsense Rhyme': Ringlty-Jing!
    And what will we sing?
    Some little crinkety-crankety thing
    That rhymes and chimes,
    And skips sometimes,
As though wound up with a kink in the spring.
    Grunkety-krung!
    And chunkety-plung!
Sing the soul that the bullfrog sung,
A song of the soul Of a mad tadpole That met his fate in a leaky bowl: And it's O for the first false wiggle he made In the sea of pale pink lemonade!
Riley's forte was the dialect poem, indeed, his dialect poems earned him the name of The Hoosier Poet, from the region where he was born and whose accents he borrowed. As time went on, however, he looked further afield for his 'voices'. 'Dot Leedle Boy' for example, is a poem told in a sort of Dutch dialect. At least I think it's Dutch. It could be German. Or even Swahili. Ot's a leedle Gristmas story Dot I told der leedle folks Und I vant you stop dot laughin' Und grackin' funny jokes!

01 When the Frost is on the Punkin
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock, And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin' turkey-cock, And the clackin' of the guineys, and the cluckin' of the hens, And the rooster's hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence; O, it's then's the times a feller is a-feelin' at his best, With the risin' sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest, As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes to feed the stock, When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.
They's something kindo' harty-like about the atmusfere When the heat of summer's over and the coolin' fall is here Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees, And the mumble of the hummin'-birds and buzzin' of the bees; But the air's so appetizin'; and the landscape through the haze Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days Is a pictur' that no painter has the colorin' to mock When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.
The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn

    RILEY MSS. VI
The Riley mss. VI, 1876-1916, consist largely of transcripts of the letters of James Whitcomb Riley, 1849- 1916, poet, of Greenfield and Indianapolis, Indiana. The transcripts were assembled over a period of years beginning in 1902 by John Marcus Dickey, 1859-1950, author and Riley's secretary, and later aided by Edmund Henry Eitel, 1866-1950, author and Riley's nephew. The purpose was to produce a volume of correspondence approved by Riley during his lifetime. The progress of this effort may be observed in the Dickey mss. correspondence beginning in November 1902. Friends and publishers of Riley, approached for copies of letters which Riley had written to them, generally acceded to the request. Approximately three thousand letters were thus acquired, but the volume never came to print. The transcript material is arranged alphabetically by recipient. Occasionally the letters bear pencilled notes. Those transcripts stamped or initialed JMD for John Marcus Dickey were acquired through an exchange with Robert Russo, dealer; those initialed EHE for Edmund Henry Eitel were received from the estate of Lesley Payne, Riley's niece. The copies, each a part of the same project, were interfiled for reasons of continuity. Among the copies were several original, carbon, or photocopied letters. This material, 1879-1915, arranged chronologically, included the following correspondents: Albert Charlton Andrews, Edmund Henry Eitel, Examiner, Joe Heavenridge, Luella S. Kinnard, Berta (Jackson) Meyer, John R. Moore, Northwestern Christian Advocate, Elizabeth Page, Henry Means Pindell, Post Dispatch, James Whitcomb Riley, Scribner, firm, publishers, Stella (Weiler) Taylor, Edith Matilda Thomas, Mary E. Watson, May A. Whipple.
