Aware that all imagining Of more than what she meant Would urge an end of everything, He stayed; and when he went, They parted with a merry word That was to him as light As any that was ever heard Upon a starry night. Edwin Arlington Robinson
A Maine poet whose numerous volumes of verse explore the repressive life of small-town American, Edwin Arlington Robinson drew inspiration for his portraits and tales from the tortured lives of his family and acquaintances. Transforming autobiography into myth, he set these stories in the fictitious Tilbury Town, the poet's emblem of the American dream gone awry, a place where creative genius is destroyed by neglect and misunderstanding.
Reared in Gardiner, ME, and educated at Harvard, Robinson's philosophical perspective came to combine the idealism of the waning Romantic Age with the dark pessimism of the dawning century. While he believed ardently in the divine spark within all man and nature, he inevitably found that spark clouded with what he called "the black and awful chaos of the night." Robinson claimed to have experienced his poetic vocation as an epiphany when, at age seventeen, he became "violently excited over the structure of English blank verse." An admirer of Robert Browning's dramatic monologues, he set about to cloak his own poetic persona in a series of masks, creating a gallery of characters, who were at once thinly veiled incarnations of his relatives and townsfolk and subtle manifestations of his own psyche.

    BIOGRAPHY
Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869–1935) Robinson grew up in Gardiner, Maine, attended Harvard, returned to Gardiner as a free-lance writer, then settled in New York City in 1896. His various odd jobs included a one-year stint as subway-construction inspector. President Theodore Roosevelt, a fan of his poetry, had him appointed to the United States Customs House in New York, where he worked from 1905 to 1909. Robinson wrote about people, rather than nature, particularly New England characters remembered from his early years. Describing his first volume of poems, The Torrent and the Night Before (1896), he told a friend there was not "a single red-breasted robin in the whole collection." Popular throughout his career, Robinson won three Pulitzer Prizes (1921, 1924, 1927).

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869-1935) was born in Head Tide, Maine, and grew up in Gardiner, Maine, where he graduated from high school. He attended Harvard University without taking a degree and later moved to New York. Robinson's early books of poetry attracted little attention, but he gained national recognition when President Theodore Roosevelt reviewed the second edition of The Children of the Night in 1905 and began promoting Robinson's poetry. He won a total of three Pulitzer Prizes over the course of his career. Robinson spent the summer of 1910 in New Hampshire and returned to the state the following year to reside at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough. He stayed at the Colony every summer for the rest of his life and a number of his poems, such as "Monadnock Through the Trees," "Man Against the Sky," and "Hillcrest," reflect upon his days in Peterborough.

To flourish, to find words, and to attend:
    Liar, physician, hypocrite, and friend,
I watched him; and the sight was not so fair
As one or two that I have seen elsewhere:
A wreck, with hell between him and the end,
Remained of Annandale; and I was there.

THE HOUSE ON THE HILL This poem provides an example of a villanelle.
    They are all gone away,
