Peter Mark Roget
Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869) was a British physician and scientist who is oddly enough best remembered for his Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases (first published in 1852). This was the first comprehensive and systematic classification of English words according to their conceptual affinities, in other words, it was an exhaustive compendium of synonyms Roget's medical career began at the University of Edinborough. He was a distinguished physician and skillful and dedicated medical administrator, who played a central role in founding the Royal Medical Academy in Manchester. But medicine did not consume his time or his talents. In 1805 Roget began to develop a system of conceptual categorization of words that would ultimately culminate in the Thesaurus. In 1814 Roget invented a slide-rule that would calculate the roots and powers of numbers. He practiced medicine in London from 1808-1840, and began work on the Thesaurus after his retirement. In 1820, Roget, Michael Faraday, and Joseph Plateau began a series of experiments investigating a pecularity of the human optic system. In 1824, Roget presented his findings in a paper to the Royal Society on the "persistence of vision." He proved that an image of an object is retained on the retina for approximately 1/16

The name Roget could soon become a virtual synonym for the word "synonym".
For those who use Roget's Thesaurus it is one of the three most important books ever printed...along with The Bible and Webster's Dictionary.
In order to communicate one's exact intention...or one's precise meaning, the Thesaurus, being a list of synonyms or verbal equivalents, is a necessary tool.
The first draft of the Thesaurus was written in 1805, two years before Webster started on his dictionary. However for a period of 47 years Dr. Roget used his manuscript as his personal, secret, treasure trove. Not until he was 73 years old did he decide to reveal and publish this great manuscript.
Since 1852, Roget's Thesaurus has never been out of print. In fact, each succeeding edition has increased the popularity of the work. The original 15,000 words included in the 1805 manuscript has increased to over a quarter of a million in the 1992 edition (the tenth printing). With such an increase in size, it is encouraging to notice that the basic content still remains intact..... for example, where the 1805 Thesaurus traces the word:
existence: "Ens, entity, being, existence, essence...", the 1992 Thesaurus contains

Roget, Peter Mark 1779-1869, English physician and lexicographer. For 50 years while he practiced medicine and was secretary of the Royal Society (1827-49), Roget prepared his Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases (1852). Born in 1761 at Oxnam in Roxburghshire, John Ferriar was a famous physician in Manchester, as well as a writer and literary critic. He had studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduated in 1781, and worked in a practice in Stockton-on-Tees, before moving to manchester around 1785.
In 1789 Ferriar was appointed physician at Manchester Infirmary, where he introduced many reforms and practices to help in the healthy recovery of patients. His campaigning led to the establishment of a Board of Health, the prohibition of cellars as living quarters, limits on domestic overcrowding and many other sanitary reforms which improved the health and living conditions of the poor people of Manchester.
He established the concept of the isolation ward for serious infectious diseases (the "fever ward"), both in the Infirmary and at the Stockport hospitals. He advocated shorter working hours, restrictions on child labour, and the introduction of public baths to improve hygiene.

Ain't It Cool News reports that Spielberg himself confirmed a Goonies sequel is in the works while visiting USC film school. They said: "He tackled many questions about his past films... technique and such. But what sparked my interest was a question regarding the Goonies. Someone asked about a sequel, and he did in fact CONFIRM that a sequel was in pre-pre production... meaning that it is in development with Spielberg involved (executive producing again) and ALL cast members returning. The story would have their children dabbling in adventures ALONG with their parents. He didn't elaborate too much on the story... just confirming that the sequel was in the works and WOULD BE MADE." Loved the first one, so it'll be interesting to see what they do with this one.
