    ATELIER I: LES SYNONYMES QU'EST-CE QU'UN SYNONYME ? Miss Whateley's Selection of Synonyms (1851) Miss Whateley had a clear conception of the ways in which synonyms differ.
    She made the following distinctions: (a) Because of differences in implications. "Both obstinacy and stubbornness imply an excessive and vicious perseverance in pursuing our own judgement in opposition to that of others; but to be obstinate implies the doing what we ourselves chose. To be stubborn denotes rather, not to do what others advise or desire." (Quoted from Sir James Mackintosh.) A trifling matter is one merely of small importance: a trivial matter is a small matter made too much of. The word "trivial" implies contempt, which "trifling" does not. By saying, "He never neglects a trifling matter," we are rather supposed to praise; but in blaming a person for frivolity, we often say, "He is always engrossed with trivial concerns." (b) Because of differences in applications. Obstinacy is generally applied to the superior;

    A BURGLAR IN THE TREASURE HOUSE
    Plumb Design's "Visual Thesaurus"
    by Robbin Murphy
    http://www.plumbdesign.com/thesaurus Thesaurus means "treasure house" in Latin and so it seems apt that the origins of this writer's tool lie some two hundred years ago in the prison cell of an Englishman named Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869). This conjures up an intriguing image of an unlucky burglar/writer patiently plotting his heist, casing the joint for when he breaks out of his jail (writer's) block unknowing that he is, like all of us, a prisoner of language and can never escape. The truth however, is that Roget a quiet and honest student was unfairly thrown into prison for a year for political reasons. To pass the time and to keep his wits he turned his philosophically-inclined mind to constructing a list of one thousand terms to use as a "repertory" of words embodying ideas. After his release he went on to become a successful physician and scholar and continued to add words and phrases to his list throughout his long life. In 1852 after he'd retired, Roget published this list as the first Roget's Thesaurus and it was an immediate bestseller not with philosophers as he'd intended, but with writers who immediately used it to enhance their writing skills. To this day there are not only the descendents of the original work but myriad printed texts using the generic term "thesaurus" published by others as well as electronic version included in major word publishing applications.

    Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869) was typical of his time. Trained as a physician, he did not limit himself to the practice of medicine; he also lectured and wrote on scientific subjects. He became Fellow of the Royal Society, and served as its secretary for many years. Roget, however, was no elitist; he founded the Society for the Diffusion of Knowledge to spread learning as widely as possible. In creating his thesaurus, Roget's purpose was to turn the dictionary upside down. Given a word, a dictionary provides its meaning. Roget had something else in mind. "The object aimed at in the present undertaking is exactly the converse of this: namely, the idea being given, to find the word, or words, by which that idea may be most fitly and aptly expressed." That, of course, is the goal of every serious writer, whether technical communicator or poet. The core of his thesaurus is nothing less than a taxonomy of ideas, a method of categorizing concepts analogous to the phylogenetic hierarchy used in biology. He established six primary classes, ranging from Abstract Relations to Sentiment and Moral Powers, with each class further subdivided. At the final level are lists of related words. In the back of the book, the Index Guide gives a quick way of getting to a list related to the idea you want to find a word for. Then it's up to you to decide which word is the best fit. The search for the perfect word can move back and forth among index, categories, and cross-references, approaching a hard-copy counterpart of being lost in hyperspace.

    This is an early pocket chess set, manufactured only 13 years after the invention of the first pocket chess set by Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869), best known as the author of Roget's Thesaurus. Roget's 1845 invention was brought about, it is said, by his passion for the game and resentment at not being able to play when away from home.
    Condition: Generally very good with only minor wear and toning. Seems to be unused.

    1831 - (SIR) DAVID BREWSTER (1781-1868) Brewster wrote his Treatise On Optics suggesting the ground glass plate could be replaced by a plate that had “a thin film of dried skim milk” when he said . . . . .“I have found that a peculiarly effect is given to the images formed in the camera obscura, when they are received upon the silvered back of a looking glass, smoothed by grinding it with a flat soft bone. In the portable camera obscura, I find that a film of skimmed milk, dried upon a plate of glass, is superior to ground glass for the reception of images.” He said the portable camera obscura was a “useful invention” which “delights every person” 1831 - PETER MARK ROGET - (1779-1869) Some reports claim the Phenakistiscope to be the invention of Roget. We believe this to be eroneous in that no facts or proof have been offered in any documentation we have seen to substantiate this. Multiple spellings of the word also appear from commentary to commentary; Phenakistoscope, Phenakistascope and Phenakistiscope which we believe is the correct spelling. An excellent compilation of these instruments and other inventors, inventions and subjects relating to cinematography can be seen at Russell Naughton's website Adventures In Cybersound 1832 - (SIR) CHARLES WHEATSTONE (1802-1875)
    Wheatstone had been working on his idea of a projector-type system that would present photographs stereoscopically but without any form of movement. This year he commissions an optical maker in London to construct two of these devices. One will use reflecting mirrors and the other refracting prisms. He will announce them in 1838.

    1824 GEORGE BIRCKBECK (1776-1841). This Englishman used the calcium lights ofGurney in his magic lantern presentations. 1824 - Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869).

    1800 - (SIR) HUMPHRY DAVY (1778-1829) Davy provides us with the most brilliant light yet used in projection, the electric (carbon) arc lamp. The work is recorded in Nicholson's Journal of 1800 as well as the lectures of Silvanus Thompson (Journal of the Royal Society of Arts, October 1895, On the Arc Light). 1800 - THOMAS WEDGEWOOD (1771-1805) Wedgewood’s previous work in experimenting with silver salts almost comes to fruition when he is able this year to make an image. Wedgewood was unable however to keep it from darkening. 1801-1802 - PAUL M. PHILIPSTHAL ( - ) Either in 1801 0r 1802, Philipsthal gave Robertson’s Fantasmagorie the English spelling Phantasmagoria and began presenting shows in London. Philipsthal was a German and was primarily responsible for the invention of ‘dissolving views’, however Childe advanced it greatly. 1802 - ROBERT HARRUP ( - ) Harrup substantiated the previous experiments of C. W. Scheele in discovering that heat had no effect on silver compounds with respect to darkening. Harrup’s own experiments on mercury salts under several environments proved again that light was the cause. 1802 - THOMAS WEDGEWOOD (1771-1805) Wedgewood published a process he calls ‘sun-printing’. He had duplicated previous work by Scheele and Schulze. Wedgewood placed sensitized papers out under the sun but could not keep the sheet from going completely black.
