"Nothing in Biology makes sense except in the light of evolution."
Theodosius Dobzhansky Natural selection Evolution by differential reproduction due to inherited design differences. Who leaves the most progeny behind wins. Neophobia Very strong aversion of new foods. Usually applied to laboratory mice or rats. Nepotism Term usually meaning job favoritism given to one relative by another. Also see Inclusive Fitness. Neural Darwinism The theory that brain cells adapt to individual environments exactly like "Natural Selection." Therefore, the theory argues that each person's brain is unique in terms of experiences, memories, and reactions. After Gerald M. Edelman, Nobel laureate, Scripps Research Institute. Neurons The brain cells used to transmit sensory, conceptual, and motor input and output impulses via electrochemical mechanisms. NOMAD Neural Organized Multiple Adaptive Device. ( AI term) Optimal Outbreeding Theory The theory that not mating with individuals too close nor far from the genetic center was optimal in terms of the natural selection/rejection process. Mating with someone too close could pair up defective alleles and cause harmful mutations, while mating with someone too far from the genetic center would break up the genetic construction from what the organism knows innately to be "safe." Several theories suggest that the immune system played a major role in this process for out ancestors. Innate chemical analysis was done primarily by sight, sound, and smell. Should be considered speculative.

The leading light among this dissenting group was Sir William Saunders FRCP (1743-1817), who was elected first President of the Medical and Chirurgical Society. Other founding members included: Dr John Yelloly MD FRS (1774-1842), one of the first pair of Honorary Secretaries; Sir Astley Cooper Bt FRCS (1768-1841), the first Treasurer and Dr Alexander Marcet MD FRS (1770-1822), the first Foreign Secretary. Trustees included Mr John Abernethy FRCS (1764-1831) and Dr Mathew Baillie FRCP (1761-1823). In 1809, Dr Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869) became responsible for the Society's Library and was made President in 1829.
Initially, the Medical and Chirurgical Society did not have its own premises and meetings were held at the 'Crown and Anchor'. Eventually two rooms in barristers' chambers at No. 2 Verulam Buildings, Gray's Inn were found and these housed the Society for five years (1805-10). In 1810, the Society moved to its second home at Lincoln's Inn Fields, where it remained for the next 25 years, first at No.3 (a neighbour of the Geological Society), then at No.30 and finally at No.57. It was there that Thomas Hodgkin in 1832 read his famous paper on "Some morbid appearances…" (Hodgkin's Disease).

Jeremy Bentham's Frigidarium manuscripts form a little known excursion by Bentham into the science of food preservation. These little discussed manuscripts are mentioned by Bentham in a letter to his brother Samuel and in two letters to Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869), a precocious physician who received scientific acclaim by the age of 21 and who in October 1800 spent six weeks with Jeremy Bentham discussing Bentham's scheme for the utilization of the sewage of big metropolises and his Frigidarium (related projects). The manuscripts are rarely mentioned in the literature on Bentham. Roget himself, referred to them only three times, the last reference written just before Roget began his stay with Bentham. Samuel Romilly (1757-1818), Roget's uncle, seems to have been aware of Bentham's Frigidarium and rather proud that Bentham saw fit to consult his nephew about it. The plans were discussed during their six week acquaintance, (although there is no record of what they discussed) Bentham wrote Roget that he felt "much the want of a confidential friend, whose sympathetic zeal might animate my languor". After this episode, however, the manuscripts are never mentioned again. This essay will do three things. First it will provide some possible reasons why Bentham was interested in refrigeration and why he abruptly ceased to show interest. Second, in order to answer the first question the history of refrigeration will be outlined and the place of Bentham's device in it will be described. Lastly, how the frigidarium was supposed to work will be explained.
