EVENT DIRECTORS A Rainy Red Brick Nearly one-third of the pre registered runners stayed home as heavy rains and 40 degree temperatures also keep away many race day registrants in the 22nd annual Miami University Red Brick Run 5K. Just a few days earlier the residence hall beaches (patios) were filled with students enjoying sunny temperatures 20 plus degrees above normal. On race day the streets and beaches were flooded and few students were outside. However, Cincinnati's Henry Dennis came to race. Dennis pulled away from the pack in the first 400 meter uphill and widened his lead after the first turn and the next 400 meter uphill. By the time he hit the mile on the downhill part of the course he had a fifteen second lead. He continued to lengthen his lead on the course that ran through and around the scenic campus. Mason's Derek Griffiths (16:38) pulled away from Eaton's Jason Newport (16:44) in the final half mile to take home runner up honors.

Guests: Allyn Lockner Recorder: Tracy Barngrover Niebaum opened and conducted the meeting. The minutes of the last meeting are available on the Internet on the CIA webpage. The address is ciao.da.state.ks.us He began the meeting by discussing a new initiative, AInternet II@ which will be used by the universities. The reason for the creation of this initiative is that Universities are finding that there is a real Abottleneck@ for research work. Jerry discussed how the new system would work. He noted that the gigipops have not been defined and paths were not set. There are 70 out of 125 research universities that have committeed to being a part of Internet II. The cost to each university will be a half million dollars per year. It is not clear yet where the management of the gigipop will be. At this point in the meeting, Allyn Lockner from SRS joined the committee. There was lengthy discussion and brainstorming to come to agreement on the definitions for AKansas State Government@, ATelecommunications@ and ACustomers@. Lockner provided direction for the group and will return to the next meeting to continue brainstorming. A synopsis of what the group arrived at is as follows:

    Steve Ryba '75
Four days after graduating from RUHS in 1975, I moved with my folks to San Marcos (San Diego County). I went to the local Junior College for a year and a half, taking classes in photography, drafting, and graphic arts. Pretty soon, I figured out that I had no idea what I wanted to be "when I grew up," so I joined the Air Force in January '77. I spent the next 10 years on Active Duty, with 6 months in Texas going to school; 4 years in Germany with a mobile and reconnaissance unit; and over 5 years in Maryland, working at the National Security Agency (NSA), also known as No Such Agency and Never Say Anything. While in Germany, I fell in love with the girl of my dreams (Lorraine, the daughter of one of the guys in my unit); we've been married for over 19 years (and happily counting).
After the Air Force, we moved back to San Marcos where we sold Real Estate for about 4 years until the Great California Real Estate Crash of 1990 showed us the error of our ways (we got tired of working for free), so I started my own computer consulting business. Starting your own businesscan be tough, so, unfortunately, there was some extra time in there as a pizza delivery driver, too.
The computer business eventually did real well, and it led to a contract with a mortgage company in San Marcos doing computer support. That turned into a full-time job offer as the manager of their IS Department. I've been there since 1995; Lorraine has been there as the Network Administrator since 1997.
