27. Oktober: Theodore Roosevelt wird in New York als Sohn des wohlhabenden Kaufmanns Theodore Roosevelt Sen. und dessen Frau Martha (geb. Bulloch) geboren.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919)
U.S. president. Author. Big-game hunter. Political reformer. Cavalryman. Conservationist. Rancher. Nobel Peace Prize winner. Few individuals have lived as eclectic, as active, or as productive a life as Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) did. On October 27, his birthday, give your students the opportunity to learn about the 26th president of the United States. Check out some great Web sites for teaching about Theodore Roosevelt.
Theodore Roosevelt was, in many ways, one of the most influential and accomplished leaders in American history. The 26th president, known as a "trust buster," broke up some of the nation's largest corporations, helped secure the passage of the Meat Inspection Act for consumer protection, and greatly expanded the powers and responsibilities of the presidency. In foreign affairs, Roosevelt reversed the previous policy of isolationism and ensured the country its place as a world leader. Perhaps his greatest and most lasting contribution was in the area of conservation. Through the creation of national forests, federal bird reservations, and national game preserves, Roosevelt protected more than 200 million acres of land through the federal government. Roosevelt's personal life was every bit as interesting and varied as his public life. A sickly child who suffered from asthma, he took on a regimen of exercise, weightlifting, and boxing to improve his health and his competitive edge. Largely self-educated, Roosevelt later graduated with honors from Harvard University. A life-long book-lover and prolific writer he wrote dozens of non-fiction books on a wide array of subjects he was also an avid outdoorsman whose experiences as a rancher and a big-game hunter are legendary.

    Theodore Roosevelt
First as a popular writer, and later as President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt exercised a profound influence on the history of the American West, earning his place among the presidential giants portrayed on Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. Born on October 27, 1858, in New York City, Roosevelt grew up in a wealthy family long prominent in local civic affairs. He was sickly as a child, suffering especially from asthma, but he early devoted himself to vigorous exercise, gaining a physical stamina and love of outdoor sports that became a hallmark of his character. Graduating from Harvard in 1880, Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway Lee and the next year was elected to the New York State Assembly, where he became a leader among the minority of Republicans who pressed for social reform through government regulation. He first headed West in , drawn to the Dakota Territory by reports that three years of systematic hunting had all but destroyed the once massive buffalo herd of the northern plains. Roosevelt was determined to add this symbol of the American West to his trophy collection before it became extinct, and despite punishing weather, he stayed in the field until he accomplished his goal. At the same time, Roosevelt became enamored of the western landscape and the strenuous outdoor life of the plains, and purchased two ranches in the Dakota Badlands before heading back east.

    Theodore Roosevelt 1858-1919
On October 28, 1858, Theodore Roosevelt was born into one of the wealthiest and most well-established families in New York. His father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., was a descendant of the original group of Dutch merchants who made their fortunes at building New York harbor into one of the most prosperous ports in America. Theodore Sr. was a gentleman and a glassware merchant. His wife, Martha Bulloch, was descended from the southern "aristocracy" of Georgia. Together, they belonged to the uppermost echelons of New York society. Not at all surrounded by the type of men he would come to champion in years to come, Theodore Jr. was well-positioned to lead a life of privilege and leisure.
Despite the wealth and social position of his family, Roosevelt's young life was far from easy. He chronically suffered from violent attacks of asthma and poor eyesight. Yet his illness inspired him to embrace life all the more fully. To improve his health, he boxed and lifted dumbbells in a room in his home which he had converted into a gymnasium.
During his early years in politics, Roosevelt enjoyed success in his professional life but suffered personal tragedy privately. In 1884 his mother died of typhoid fever. Two days later, his wife died after giving birth to their first child, Alice Lee. Although he would go on to marry Edith K. Carow, a family friend since childhood, he continued to blame himself for his "inconstancy" to the memory of Alice. On second marriages, he wrote, "I have always considered that they argued weakness in man's character. You could not reproach me one-half as bitterly as I reproach myself."

He was at various times an outdoor sportsman, explorer, western rancher, and soldier, as well as an aggressive political leader and writer on history and public affairs. While the American people had ample opportunity to observe Roosevelt's public side, he kept his personal relationships extremely private. These letters reproduced here show an aspect of Roosevelt's life seldom seen by the public.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) Diary entry February 16, 1884 Manuscript Division Theodore Roosevelt's seven surviving pocket diaries provide a unique insight into the inner man. On 13 February 1880, an ecstatic Roosevelt recorded his great joy, because the woman of his dreams, Alice Hathaway Lee, who he had actively courted for more than a year, had finally accepted his proposal of marriage. Knowing that his love was reciprocated and that he could now "hold her in my arms and kiss her and caress her and love her as much as I choose" gave the enraptured young Roosevelt enormous satisfaction. On February 14, 1884, Theodore Roosevelt received a terrible blow-both his wife and mother died within hours of one another in the Roosevelt house in New York City. His mother, age 50, succumbed to typhus, and his wife Alice died at the age of 22 giving birth to her namesake. The following diary entries lovingly describe his courtship, wedding, happiness in marriage, and his grief over the death of his wife Alice, after which he never spoke of the union again. Roosevelt's seven surviving diaries provide a unique insight into the inner man.

    The Man

Theodore Roosevelt, the second of four children, was born on October 27, 1858 in New York City. As a child, he struggled against frailty, nearsightedness and asthma. His love for reading helped foster a love for nature and the outdoors. He also exercised vigorously and developed a lifelong interest in what he called "the strenuous life". He entered Harvard at 18 intent of becoming a naturalist. As a senior he began work on a book, "The Naval War of 1812." TR graduated 21st in a class of 177 in 1880 and married Alice Hathaway Lee. After graduation, at the age of 22, Mr. Roosevelt joined New York City's 21 District Republican Club and was elected to the New York Assembly. TR's mother died of typhoid in February 1884, and his wife died later the same day of Bright's disease (a kidney ailment) while giving birth to their daughter, Alice. TR left New York to regain his strength and confidence at the Elkhorn Ranch in the North Dakota Badlands. Returning to NYC in 1886, TR ran unsuccessfully for Mayor. That year, he married Edith Kermit Carow, who would bear him five children. Political service to Benjamin Harrison won TR a seat on the Civil Service Commission in 1889. He gained national attention by staging a fight against favoritism. TR's position: Jobs should go to the most qualified applicants.
